Whats this part called
Re: Whats this part called
It's called a heater control valve, sometimes called a hot water valve. It keeps coolant out of the heater core until you turn the heat on. Not sure if your interested, but you can delete it.
Re: Whats this part called
Actually, it only bypasses coolant around the heater core when you select full cold on the hot-cold slider switch of the HVAC controls.
Yes, you can delete it and the bypass hose that goes with it if you do some work with the hoses. Set it up so that the coolant goes straight from the metal exit nipple at the back of the intake manifold directly into the heater core. Also, delete the "bypass" hose and plug the connection point where it feeds into the metal coolant return line on the pass. side frame rail.
Or just buy a new bypass assy. from your local auto parts store for a few bucks and put it in.

Anyway, it's pretty easy to delete it. First look at the hoses that go into it. There are 3 large 5/8" (one may be 3/4", I can't remember) heater hoses and 1 vacuum hose. Cap the vacuum hose with a vacuum cap and go ahead and remove the 3 heater hoses that are attached to the heater valve (have a cup or bucket ready for coolant to spill into. Next, remove the 5/8" heater hose that is attached from the heater valve to the large heater hose on the passenger side framerail, and cap that with a 5/8" heater hose nipple or block-off with a hose clamp (those can be found in the HELP section of any auto parts store). Now all you have to do is connect the two remaining heater hoses with a 5/8" heater hose plastic straight or 90* elbow and hose clamps (also found in HELP section). Now your done. Let me see if I can dig up some pictures for you.

Here we go. It's not my car, but it's the best pictures I can find. This is a picture of the 2 heater hoses that you have to connect:

And here's a picture of the heater hose that you have to block off:

Hope this helps.

Re: Whats this part called
Why are you bypassing it? Once you do, you won't have any heat so if you drive it on a cool day, it will be cool. Now, if your core was leaking, then you might want to do it if you don't want to tear out the dash to fix it.

The only gain is it clenas up your engine bay.

Re: Whats this part called
I forgot to mention bypassing it will cause your water pump to only last about 6 months. Most people just buy one with a warrenty and keep going back for more.
If you didn't figure it out i'm just being a jerk. Enjoy your slightly less cramped engine bay and slightly warmer AC
