What's involved in swapping 4th gen rear end to 3rd gen?
If you have seen my other whining thread you know that I am trying to put 3.42s or 3.73s into a rear that I think has 2.86. I am told that not only does the carrier have to be changed, but in fact the housing so all I can jeep is the axles(big F deal!)! Someone mentioned a 4th gen car can donate a rear. Are they a bolt in swap?
no need to change the housing
I went from 2.73 gears to 3.73, using the OE housing, a take-out 4th gen Zexel Torsen posi carrier and axle shafts from a 91 firebird(needed the 28 spline axles)

I live this idea best.
They won't stick out 2" past the quarter panels. The rear will add up to 4" extra rear track width. Each wheel will move out 1.5" to 2" depending on rear, but not past the lip. Depending on which wheel you use, they either line up with the lip or stick out just a tad - but not 2" Regardless it does look goofy
