What temp thermostat?
What temp thermostat?
What temp thermostat does my 90 RS 305TBI have? (LO3) It is stock, so I just need to know what's in it. Thanks!
Also, I have read that during the time that the LO3 was out, it made anywhere from 150-170 HP. Anyone know what year exactly it went to 170? I am assuming my 90 is 170.

Re: What temp thermostat?
stock stat should be 195*
doesn't www.thrid-gen.org have the year-by-year list of engines and options?

The L03 (305 TBI) is rated at 170 HP and 255 ft. lbs. of TQ. Doesn't matter what year, they were rated at the same stats from 88-92.
Re: What temp thermostat?
Hi....I just modified my fan system. I took out the one fan and added the dual fan setup. I put in the Painless radiator fan setup and am using a thermostat that comes on at 200 and shuts off at 185. Cools great...you can also add the Red line coolant liquid which will help keep your motor 20 degrees cooler....

But wont the cooler-running Camaro's (the ones using 195* thermo's) be more pollution prone? I thougt that is why they were so high?
Re: What temp thermostat?
just remember that the thermastat only controls minimum operating temperature and that the temp rating indicated the temperature that it starts to open and not the temperature that it is fully open at.
ex: a 195 thermastat starts to open at 195 and is fully open at about 210-225 its usually about a 15-30 or so difference. and installing a lower temp thermasta is not beneficial really because it does not provide the proper restriction of coolant flow so although your temp gauge may say for example 190 or whatever thats only the temp of the coolant and not the temp of the engine. so the engine block itself can actually be much hotter like around 240 for example and that is much to hot for the block.
so baisically if the coolant is allowed to circulate to fast it cant absorb enough heat from the engine and you start having issues like hot spots developing as well as pre-ignition and detonation and excessive carbon buid up.

so in other words I actually have a 195* thermostat if my engine is about 225*?
Re: What temp thermostat?
probably but you also have a thermostic clutch operated fan so you would run hotter than a camaro with electric fans
pretty much in all thirdgens the stock thermostat is a 195

Re: What temp thermostat?
lol. i toyed around with trying to mod a few shrouds to work but it got annoying and i gave up but the fans are easy to get and cheap.
the actual fans differ slightly from the ones i have.
the real fans are like this
\/
fan here
I more or less the \/ are the lower mounts and the I is the upper mount
the ones i have the upper mount is at an ange from the lower mounts and not dead but im sure i can make them work hehe.
