What size cam?

I just inherited a 92rs anniversary with stock 305tbi+ flowmaster muffler. Had a 96 with lt1 and some bolt-ons, and well built 91 z28 with 350tpi in the past that i loved. I know i will never have the power with this 305tbi but till I get the money for engine swap I'd like to make this one a lil beefier, starting with intake and cam kit with lifters, rockers, etc... I'm just wondering what size cam i should go with for weekender/street type use? I want a good lope with decent performance gain would be nice. Like i said I know its never gonna have the power of the 350 without incredible amounts of work and money, I just want it to sound good and run well enough for a V8 for now... Also, any good suggestions on what intake and throttle body setup to go with?

Until you go with either a carb setup or some sort of port fuel injection, camming a 305 TBI is a complete waste. Swapping the intake manifold does little to nothing, again, due to the TBI unit sitting on top.

Some guys like to run a stock LT1 cam, but this is a lot of work for little to no gain, and it won't give you the lope you're looking for. Any cam that would give you a lope will most likely hurt performance, again, because... I think you get the point.

The money would be much better spent with an open element air cleaner or dual snorkel setup on it. And put on a good set of headers and y-pipe - don't touch anything else.

Yeah, i was definately goin with the open air element and edelbrock makes a higherflow tbi unit I was goin to throw on top but I am still debating on whether to do that or carb. Another buddy of mine has a 84 305 with cam, intake, exhaust that performs like a beast, but of course it's carbed. So it would be well more worth my while to go carburated if anything on this engine? Or would it be ok to go with the upgraded tbi unit?

The larger TBI units hurt performance more than they help. If you went with a mild 350 or 383 you might see a gain. But not on near stock 305.

Again, if you want performance, the TBI setup is NOT the way to go. You would be better off with a carb.

For instance: most who go with an open element, Edelbrock intake manifold, LT1 cam, good headers with 3" exhaust, gears, etc are lucky to see 14s.

Get some N2O, it give you by far the most bang for your buck, can be used one what ever you swap in the 305's place, and can even help usher in that swap.

N20 is a idea for a quick fix! I would recommend saving up your coin and taking your time to do a lot of research as to what you really want to do. Do this til say next winter, and just enjoy your ride for the summer. Most guys will do their builds over the winter months when they don't drive there rides anyways. Cause it really sucks when everyone is out having fun enjoying the sun, and you got nothing to show, except maybe your buddies ride.

Yeah, I got a open air element and cleaning it up a little bit for now, I'm just going to wait on any engine mods, putting any spare money into restoring interior for now. And as suggested, just enjoy the good weather for now with her, because she is still a beautiful ride. I'm really leaning towards dropping in the ls1 when i get the money for it next year. I know I'm going to need to find one with wiring harness and all but have recieved different opinions on trans, some say it's ok to bolt on to the stock 92 transmission, but i think I'd prefer to find a long block, harness, trans combo if possible. Any thoughts?

No offence but that engine would never be enough for me so I would work around it.I would put on a full exhaust, fuel system(650 d.p. and performer rpm air gap),a high stall converter and 3.73 gears.Everything that would support an engine swap later.

The best bang for the buck on that car is the exhaust. Flat out sucks. Replace headers back. save the cam, intake for later but the exhaust is huge improvement. then put in some 3.42 and you will not believe the difference. I dropped 3.5 seconds in my 89 formula
