What holds the 305 back!
Yeah Z28Sorr..... What's the deal? Are You saying that 500 hp can't be made out of a nitrous injected 305 thats well built? There are 2.0 liter Honda's that can make over 600 hp! Why would a 5.0 liter GM motor be incapable???
He, he ,he......you guys crack me up!!!
First it's 500hp, 305 Chevy's then it's 600hp 122ci(2L), Honda's. Just out of curiosity I did a search for 600hp Honda's. There were hundereds of post, all claiming to have one, or knowing someone how has one, or "I'm going to build one", or video's of some Honda that supposedly has 600hp. But not a single dyno graph. Except for one, and he had two 300hp engine in one car.
Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places, so if you'd be so kind as too post the link to the 600hp Honda, I'd certainly be interested.
Oh, and while your at it, go ahead and post a half dozen links,or so, to the 500hp, 305ci. Chevy's. There must be at least 50 of them out there. After all you just have to throw a 250 shot on a stocker and bingo, 500hp. "It's a piece of cake."

And for the 305.... I never said that You'd get 500+ horsepower by simply adding nitrous to a stock engine. It obviously is gonna need some head work and a bigger cam to help achieve those power levels with nitrous.
OOPS! My bad! Did I say a 500 horsepower Honda? I meant a 700 horsepower+ Honda. And yeah there's a dyno graph too. I guess I'm looking in the right places. I'm not a fan of imports... But damn that thing has got to be super fast!

I agree with the above. 600whp in 4cyl is a thing of the past. Just look at the mitsubishi motors, look how many evo's and eclipses are WELL into the 800+hp power numbers, and thats AWHP. I'd be more than happy to show you a whole lineup of 500hp+ imports if you'd like, and they're all local to me.
Z28SORR got a little quite on this thread... Where You at Buddy? We're all waiting for You to chime in on the unlimited potential of the 305! We all love to see the underdogs superceed!!! No 305 should be taken lightly.... Regardless of the lack of cubic inches.
Again, there is nothing wrong with bolting on parts to your stock 305 engine. But once you have to remove the engine, it makes no sense to put the 305 back in there.
When I first started with my car, it was a 305 5-speed. My best time was a 15.20 @ 90 MPH. After the clutch started slipping, we removed the trans to replace it, but then it was only a couple more hours to remove the engine, too. So we dropped in a stock 350 TBI bottom end, with my stock TPI top end. Right off the bat I went 15.06 @ 93 MPH the next time out, and 14.77 @ 95 the time after that. I eventually got it down to 14.33 @ 97 with the stock manifolds. A header swap got me to 14.07 @ 100, and a friend jumped in the car and went 13.86 @ 99.
My dad managed a best of 14.98 (cant remember the MPH) with his 92 Camaro RS, 305 TBI bottom end with a TPI cam and intake. Then he swapped in a stock 350 L98 (stock heads and cam) with headers and went 13.97 @ 100.

We went from have a resonable discussion on the limits of the 305, to 600hp Honda's, to 800+hp Mitsu's. I suppose it's inevitable, the next post will be about a 1200hp Mazda.
The question that comes to mind is WHY would you attempt to build a 500+ hp 305?
It would not be cost effective. It would be hard to make it streetable. It would probably have a shorter life span than a similar hp 383.
The reason why 305's are looked down upon is that for the same (or less) money you can build up a respectable 350 & drop it right in. For a bit more (circumstances depending) you could build a very strong 377/383/400/etc...

i race alot for money...
If you say you have a 305 under the hood the mustang guys get all excited cause they think they have a chance, then if i have a 305 with that power potential it would be kinda like a sleeper! and boom 500 in my pocket when i rape them in a race!
This is just a consideration by the way.
My current ride is a 530rwhp 2000 camaro.
but i have the money and time to build a motor to drop into a car so...
Not a bad idea huh!

You could do a lot to a 305, but the point still remains that the same could be done to a 350 for more power.
What I would do in your case is only do supportive mods right now. Get the car ready for a hi-po mill and then once you have the ability to built or buy one, you can drop it in and not have to worry too much about breaking things.
The 305 can make great power. Ive seen supercharged and nitrious 305's do 11's easy.
If you stop over at thirdgen.org, there are a lot of ideas. For budget, there are several parts for 305's.
1- Cams are the same for any small block, just make sure you get the right one. If you have a roller motor, get a roller cam. If you have a tappet motor, get a tappet cam.
2- due to the small bore, heads are kinda tough to find. You could port and rebuild a set of LB9/L69 heads, or you could find a set of Aluminum L98 heads that have the smaller chamber for teh 305 as well as theya re made from aluminum, or get a set of World's S/R 305 Torquer heads. These mimic the LB9 heads only largeri ntake valves, theya re already built for you, and have a lot more material to port.
Intake and carb will depend on how far you take it.

heres a link of a 800hp crx. with dyno numbers to boot. www.raygoldmodels.com
thats a nasty crx if you ask me
