Wet plenum and runners

I removed the plenum and runners today in order to reach my EGR to clean it and I discovered that the insides of the plenum and runners was wet. It smells a lot like gas. Last week I sprayed out the intake with carb cleaner and used seafoam as well, but I would have to imagine that it would be dry from that by now since I drove it daily. I have my suspicions on what the cause is, but I want a second opinion before I start trying to fix it.

"Carb" Cleaner....Big no no... use air intake and trottle body cleaner ONLY. Gas don't flow in the plenum or runners, just air.

Re: Wet plenum and runners

because carb cleaner would probably ruin a sensor or two possibly, or even eat a gasket i think, depending on the type used. I know that carb cleaner will eat the little o-rings on the end of the fuel tubes on carbs (the tube the connects the two fuel bowls)

Carburated engines have gaskets too so I don't think they will be a problem. As far as sensors go, the only one I can see it haveing any affect on would be the MAP sensor, assuming enough could get in there and stay long enough to do anything (It's not exactly drawing it's own vacuum or anything).

Re: Wet plenum and runners

only real issue with carb clean on a FI motor, is that lots of the throttle bodies have a special coating, and carb clean can remove it, but I always use carb clean, never had a problem

My throttle body had a special coating. It was called "carbon deposits". Your right though, the carb cleaner removed it .

A lot of TBs are coated with Teflon. Most TB cleaners are marked "Teflon safe." But I also know of people who have used carb cleaner in their TBs, and never had any problems...

Re: Wet plenum and runners

When you use carb cleaner in a carb the gas that flows through the carb helps burn off the excess. However the TPI engine does flow fuel through the Plenum or runners so the excess just stays in there for a long time. The air intake and trottle body cleaner evaporates faster so there is no excess. If you just used carb cleaner thats why your plenum and runner are wet and carb cleaner smells alot like gas.

actually, carb clean dries fast when there is air flowing past it..........
