Ok, so my car makes a popping sound every so often when I give it a lot of gas. Sometimes it puffs out smoke out of the carb when it does that. I noticed today, it puffed out smoke out of the drivers side of the engine, it looked like the front of the valve cover/head. What could make it do that? Also, sometimes when I turn off the car, after a couple seconds it pops out the exhaust. Anyone know what the deal is? Also, I've posted about it before, but the car dies a lot when it is first started until it warms up. Someone told me maybe the accelerator pump in the carb could be bad, and to check it by working the throttle while the engine was off. I did, and it did shoot some gas in. Does that have anything to do with it? Thanks a lot guys!

What do i do to fix that?

 

does it shoot out alot of gas there should be a steady stream.

 

It just squirts out and stops. It seems pretty strong when it comes out, but then just stops. Could it be something simple like a fuel filter or is it something much more ominous?

 

Oh, and it makes kind ofa hissing sound too, kind of like the vacuum leak it makes when i take off the air cleaner, but much quieter. I wouldn't have any idea how to find how everything hooks up though and where the leak is. or maybe its just the carburetor, i dont know, the carburetor makes a 'ffp' sound when you rev it. I dont know much about carbs. Also, I played with the timing some and got it to quit backfiring, but it still tries to die when its first started, until it is warmed up for a few minutes. And if it's cold, if I punch the gas the engine will almost stall for a second before it finally starts pulling.

as for the cold thing i would check if your choke is working properly

 

uhh, how do i do that? sorry, im kinda dumb!

 

when cold flip the linkage and see if it closes(it should)
then start it and the choke should slowly open as the engine gets warmer
the flap should be straight up
