Weight reduction

I wasn't really sure where to put this so I put it here. What can be done to lighten up the third gen cars? Im taking my Formula to the track for the first time ever and I'm trying to get a 14.99 out of it. I think I'm close so every bit is gonna help.

Re: Weight reduction

Ditch the AC and smog pumps. That will also free up some power.
Ditch the catalytic converter.

Re: Weight reduction

Minimum gas, a full tank weighs in at 80+ pounds.

Remove the passenger seats, make sure nothing extra is in the car, and that's about all you can do without major dissasembly and lightweight parts. (f'glass hood, etc.)

Re: Weight reduction

You're not going to gain any power from ditching the AC, you will lose some weight, but it is not worth it.

Re: Weight reduction

Well the point of the thread is weight reduction.....

The removal of the AC from spinning and its weight combined with the weight removal of the smog pump and its power draining spin and getting rid of the catyctic converter will net him a tiny bit more power.

Re: Weight reduction

Ive already done away with the spare tire and cats. The cats were more for sound than weight though, they didnt weight more than 10 pounds.

Im keeping the AC cause it gets hot in the summer, but lets talk about the smog pump, how do i get rid of it?

Re: Weight reduction

The smog pump? Just yank that **** off! Unless you have a damned serpentine system.. which in your case I believe you do...

Re: Weight reduction

AC stays, end of discussion

yeah ive got the serpentine belt, but i know after i take it off i need a 96.8 inch belt. Theres nothing i have to do? I just rip it out? Ive heard horror stories about what could happen if you take it off though, has anybody actually done it?

Re: Weight reduction

I've done it in my 3rd gen and have no ill effects. Just pull the belt off and then the smog pump and all hoses attached to it. Take the plug that goes to the pump and tuck it away otherwise you can remove it completely, I tucked mine under the throttle body. The use pipe caps and cap off the smog pipes on your manifolds and since you removed the cat you should not have the pipe that leads down to it anymore otherwise you would need to cap that off as well. Good luck, it is really easy to do and costs nothing more than the belt.

Re: Weight reduction

seems like the belt would be cheaper than the pulley though, i think ill go that way.
