Vortec TPI to carb. set up ideas

As many of you know I purchased a Scoggin Dickey Vortec TPI engine a couple years ago. The car is running very rich and I won't drive it. All my attempts to get the OBD I computer properly dyno/tuned have fallen through. This not being a car shop town I've just decided to go with a carb. set up. I just want to drive the car I've spent 10K on with all the new parts.

I was looking at the almost complete combo from Summit with dual-quad intake for the Vortec. It's $1,085. Is this good for a car that will be used mostly as a daily driver. MPG is not a concern? http://store.summitracing.com/partde...6&autoview=sku

If it is not a good streetable combo what intake and carb. do you suggest.? Mostly a daily driver but will race a couple times a month locally. Mods are in sig.

I noticed some intakes are rated at idle to 5500rpm or so and some are 1500rpm to 6500rpm. My redline is only about 5800 in my crate motor. So I guess the idle to 5500 would be best.

Any suggestions are welcome. I wanna cruise!

EDIT: are my fans run by the computer or a sensor directly hooked up to my radiator? Just wondering what I'll need to do to make my fans come on at 190* to 210* or so

Uh oh,going carbed now huh??

Well Ive been here and done that.

The list you will need is as follows:

An adjustable fuel presure regulator that will knock FP down from 36 to 5.5-7.
This is what I used on mine:http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

You'll need an HEI distributor b/c your factory one is computer controlled...heres some that will work:http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...4294840140+115

I would not use that dual quad intake unless you want something really "cool" or different b/c making adjustments is going to be a pain b/c of having to do everything twice!

A Performer intake (idle-5500) will work, but I used a Perf. RPM on mine (1500-6500) and it cleared the stock hood but had to use a drop base air cleaner. I would prob. go w/ the RPM again myself.

Any type of 650 cfm carb will work as well, you dont need a 750 regardless what anyone else tells you. If you want more power than fuel economy, get a Holley...more economy than power get an Edelbrock. Again this is up to you which you want.

You will also need a different torque convertor lock-up mechanism b/c after switching to carb it wont lock up and eventually it'll burn up your tranny. Heres one http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

As far as the fans go im not sure...its been so long. When I did mine,I left the computer in the car and hid the harness in the passenger fender....did that so I didnt have to re-wire the fuel pump when the key was on.

Just remembered, I put my fans on a manual switch so I could turn them on earlier and kept the motor cooler.

Any other ?'s feel free to PM me.

If you can tune a carb, you can tune EFI. You need tools to tune a carb, and you need tools to tune EFI. You just need the right tools and the right knowledge. Carbs are not easier than EFI, they just require different tools.

a vortec setup shouldnt have any negative effects, especially with a maf setup, unless you put on different injectors or a cam with a close lsa will cause some serious tuning challenges. I ran a 355 vortec with a performer rpm intake and a 650 vac sec holley running 6 psi of fuel and a mild cam. I had msd ignition, and 3.45 gears stock everything else and I ran a 14.3 going sideways all the way thru 2nd gear. with new tires I wouldve been high to mid 13s all day.Personally I wouldnt get rid of the tpi because of tuning issues but to each there own.
