vats in an 88 ?

i want to know if my 88 Iroc 305 tpi vin F has a vats system or not? i've read many articles and some say it does and some say no. I have no chip in my key but it is a copy, i don't think vats was introduced in these cars in 88 but not sure. my train of thought in diaging my problem will be greatly reduced without thinking about a vats system. my problem has multiple articles and many cures but not sure where to start in the diag process. any help would be appreciated on this. and as far as the real problem that is for another thread. (codes,idle,rich,o2,maf,maf burnoff etc) to name a few many diags and articles read. mabe someone might also know of detailed threads to help with this would help also.

Re: vats in an 88 ?

always start with basics
check for fuel pressure and spark,
sensors rarley cause no start, it'll just run bad
if it turns over with the key its not VATS

2 very common problems for no start are a bad fuel pump and a bad ignition control module

I'm not saying change them, but check spark and fuel pressure

You would be able to actually see the chip in the earlier keys. It has a black plastic thing with a metal strip on the key. Very bulky and noticable. Good luck. I agree also with 89VERT about, if the motor turns over its not the system either.

Re: vats in an 88 ?

thanks for the info, i'm pretty sure no vats in this car. i knew there is a chip in the key for vats but i wasn't sure if the previous owner just made a copy without a vats key. the car does run it is not a no start it just runs real crappy. very rich can see it in the exhaust (black smoke). which is why i was leaning to an o2, maf,maf burnoff, etc. i also found that this car has a cold start injector. any one know of a test to see if this is working properly?

If it starts up right away when it's cold, it's working properly.
