This is weird

i have a 90 camaro rs with a 305 maf TPI motor from an 89 iroc. the car has an aftermarket cam, so it idles a little rough, but when i have my headlights on, the buzzer stays on the whole time, and my car tries to die when i come to a stop....acts like its not getting enough fuel. anyone have any ideas whats going on? any help is appreciated!

thanks
chris

Re: This is weird

Could be you have a weak altenator, not providing enough juice to power all the lights and the fuel pump. Also, it could be the wiring to the fuel pump is deteriorated to the point that when you turn on the lights not enough power is getting to the pump, even though the altenator is putting out what it should.

Hope this helps.

Re: This is weird

Has the computer had any tuning done for the cam/modifications? If not,the computer might have the idle set to low for the engine to run and it will try to stall...especially if theres no stall convertor.

As for the headlight switch and the buzzer question...id just end that buzzers life or I guess the headlight switch might be taking a crap causing the buzzing.

Did it do this before you replaced the alternator?

Re: This is weird

yeah, its done it since ive had the car. when its warming up it idles up to about 1700 rpm then drops down and almost dies, then goes back up. as for the computer i dont know if any mods were done, the guy i got the car from did the engine/tranny swap. as for driving, it runs great while its gettin gas but when i have to stop, it idles really low and i have to keep tapping the gas to keep it running. ive checked all the wiring to the fuel pump and the injectors, plugs, distributor, and it all looks fine....theres no dryrotted plastic on them and no rusty ones.

thanks for all the replies, the help is much appreciated

Re: This is weird

Well, if it only happens when the lights are on, I suspect crossed wires. The buzzer is receiving power from the headlight circuit.

Re: This is weird

You really need to find out if the computer chip is stock or an aftermarket burned one. A better tune will make the car run better.

Another thing to check is the TPS voltage. Should be .54V with the throttle closed. Cleaning the IAC valve might be a good idea as well.

Re: This is weird

thanks for the info...i checked on the chip and its stock, the only really major mod is the cam. I dont know what the specs are on it, but just by hearing the car run you can tell its a good bit bigger than stock, so a ecm tune would be a good idea. i also dont have a cat, and i know theres an o2 sensor in them so could that have something to do with it?

thanks for the help

Re: This is weird

UPDATE: a little tweak of the iac made a huge improvement. and getting the chip tuned will get the rest of the bugs out most likely. thanks for all the help

Re: This is weird

Glad to hear it. The IAC's in those cars get gummed up alot and never get cleaned out, welcome to the life of an almost-year old car.

Re: This is weird

Did it originally have the 5speed? Could also check the VSS and make sure the computer knows that you're moving. Had a similar problem when I did the slushbox-to-t56 thing.

Re: This is weird

im pretty sure the tranny and motor were a pair originally but the body came with the 700r4 and a v6. BTW i found a major issue that was causing some of the problems, one of the wires going to one of the injectors was broke, so thats fixed now and its got a hell of alot more power, but it still seems to want to die at an idle. i did some tps tuning and im gonna adjust my iac tomorrow.

p.s. in the post where i said i adjusted my iac i actually was adjusting the tps. got em mixed up, and now i feel like a n00b for making a mistake like that lol.
