V8 To V6 Swap
Yup, thats right, I've been thinking about it, alot of the newer V6's are faster then our v8's (I know my V8 pulls less then 160 hp.... pretty small)
so I was wondering, how hard would it be to toss in a v6 from a 4th gen camaro.... or any v6 thats powerful really....
Is there really any place you can actually buy a v6 thats made for porformance?
I figure that the extra gas milage you get with a v6 would be worth the swap alone, but if done right I would also get a fair amount of hp over my stock v8.
Anyone ever done this?

or you could just go buy a 4th gen v6 car if you want a 6 that bad. cuz by the time you buy the engine and ciomputer etc.....do the swap make it all fit and work right and still make more power than your current v8 your gonna spend about the same amount of money not to mention after hotrodding the v6 your gain in gas mileage over the v8 will not be enough to worry about.
come on man these cars are supposed to be AMERICAN sports cars, that means big heavy V8 engine. let the import sports cars have there v6's and just build or rebuild an engine for your car, be it a 305/350/383 whatever.
ya get what i'm sayin?

Horsepower is simply a coefficient derived from an equation using TORQUE. Horsepower means nothing really... its like one of those, "how much can you bench?" questions.
You want a V6, buy a V6 car. You want to make your car faster, start modding it. Dropping a V6 in a car, especially your heavy car, is gonna do nothing but make it slower... Unless of course you slap a Turbo or Supercharger on it.

Ah, hee hee, you got me all wrong, I wasn't planning on actually swapping to a v6, I was just thinking about it, you know, like "what if I could flap my arms fast enough to fly" kinda thing, I'm still planning on getting a 383, or atleast a 350 and stroke it.
its just my girlfriend is interested in something alittle easier on gas, or atleast something alittle bit more powerful.
I got the idea out of, i think, chevy performance, where they beefed up a s-10 v6 to 300 hp, my girlfriend was like "Why don't you do that?"
But I cut a deal with her, I get her a jeep wrangler, I get a 92+ Camaro/ firebird with a v8, and all is good.
I figure a 92+ would hold a 383 alittle better, as after buying the engine, I wont have much money to spred around on newer trans and upgrades....
But back on topic, thanks for the information, I wasn't planning on swapping, I just figured it would be something new on the message board ^_^

You do realize that instead of wasting your time dropping a 3.8, you could put in a real motor with less hassle and less money, right? There are PLENTY of V8s out there that will pound your 305 into the ground that you can buy for less money than a 3.8 and not go through the extrordinary hassles of putting a multiport 3.8 in.
Now if you were talking about a Grand National motor, well, that's different.

I have my eyes set on a large V8, I, Personally, don't mind bad gas milage, its my girlfriend that thinks I should get a tiny engine, but she agrees with me when I say that if your going to buy a sports car, then MPG isn't really what you buy it for ^_^
I asked simply because I find it interesting that noone actually talks about what you can do with a v6, not even the mags out there talk about v6's, I would never drive anything less then a v8, but I was raised around muscle cars my whole life, so I'm sorta bias.
I just noticed that with the crunch that GM is putting on the average V8 comsumer, there really isn't any improvement in the v8 aftermarket, its all pretty much the same, and as such V6's are starting to catch up in horse power ratings, they (the engine) lacks torque in comparison to V8's, but still, there is a growing aftermarket for american V6 'muscle' nowadays, and I was wondering if anyone was actually ever interested in down swapping their engines into anything smaller.

Hee hee, noone seems to understand, I'm not interested in actually swaping my v8 down to a v6, I'm just interested in knowing how hard it would be.
The way I see it is if I was going to put a blower on anything, it would be a v8 in the first place, so its pointless to buy a v6.
My girlfriend and I thought it would just be interesting to see if its ever been done before by anyone, and I was wondering what their outcome was ^_^
I remember reading about a 60 something mustang that originally had a v8, and the guy tossed a v6 in there for an odd reason, it never said anything about the differances he noticed, and ford and chevy are differant, and so is the 60's to the 80's.
I also remember reading a nova with 2 V6 engines in it, it was nice looking, but very unlikely for a camaro I would figure.

I have not done this so I can't help, but I can add to this strange thread.
A friend of mine asked me last week about putting a 1.6vtec motor in his Integra. For about 1800 dollars he could buy the complete motor and tranny and have only about 10 more hp. So I figured 1800dollars for the goods, another 1000 at least for everything needed for the swap and some hard work=a slower car. Smaller motor with less torque in a bigger car will be slower. I suggested he put the 3k or so into his motor and blow some doors off(other Hondas that is).
Some people ask me why I didn't just spend the money for my swap on the 305. A 305 can run regardless of what people say. I just new that where I wanted to go, a streetable 305 would be pushing it. So I just went bigger with more potential.
The easiest way though to do a swap though would be to unplug two spark plug boots

How hard is it to make a honda actually go fast?
I see alot of hondas up here and although they 'look' fast, most of them are slower then stock (all those damned stickers, and of course, their three friends kicking it in the car with them)
can you do it without power adders?
Man this thread is getting wierd ^_^
