Update on my 305 rebuild
Well some of you might rember me askin about a good cam for a 305 but when I pulled the 305 out I found out it needed a total rebuild, so I thought what the hell I`ve wanted to do my 1st engine for a long time so I jumped at the chance
I was just going to change the top end but when i took one off the main caps off the bearing looked bad so I checked all of the bearings and they were all bad so I pulled all the pistons out and the 1st ring on 5 pistons where broke
YAY and no they diddn`t break when I pulled them out. but the Crank and the block are in great shape for having 285000km on them and MANY 5000 rpm shifts. The tops of the cylinders barley had a ridge on them (thanx quaker state) if anybody tells me changin your oil is a wast of time I`ll just laugh, everyone thinks that changin my oil every 3000km was overkill, tell that to my cylinders
. So anyways I gutted the 305 to a bare block and cleaned it and painted it Chevy orange and clear coated it. I sent the crank to get polished and I honed the cylinders. I`m picking up my bearings and rings tomorrow and putting the bottem end togher.
My mods:
Edelbrock Performer EGR, 305 heads w/ bowl job, gasket matched and 1.94" intakes, Crane 272 H10 cam, dubble roller timming chain and a Holley 600 carb w/ 1" spacer
.
I don`t know if I should replace my oil pump though it was good when I took it out and I`m outta money
so I don`t know. But I did replace my water pump.
I CAN`T wait till I get it all back in
. So far I LOVE doing my 1st engine I`ve learned alot since I`ve NEVER done this before. wish me luck, I need it lol. After I get the 305 finished, the 350 is callin me to rebuild it
and after I do the 350 theres no excuse not to do my 383
. Oh and if you never done this before and you want to, DO IT it`s AWSOME building you 1st engine, even if it`s only a 305. I`ll keep you guys posted.

Awesome Chris! I hope it all turns out well for ya. Just remember, use engine assembly lube on anything that is metal to metal, and torque everything to specs. Also, watch out, some things like your cylinder heads need to be done in a certain torqueing pattern. Also one more thing to remember. When you put your piston rings on, be sure to offset all the rings gaps from one another, otherwise you will get blowby.
If your oil pump was mainting pressure before the gears in the pump will be fine. However, you do want to change the spring in the pump. It will give you 70 psi at w.o.t and about 40 psi at idle. Order it from the GM dealer for about $5.......the p/n is 3848911 and it should be painted white. This spring is easy to install and works very well, i have installed two of these springs in different small blocks and it maintains hi oil pressure without a problem....
thanx guys for the tips, I`m gonna borrow my bro-in-laws book on how to rebuild a sbc that should help me alot and I`ll go check out that spring for my oil pump, well I`m off to pick up my bearings and rings bye.
well the 305 is mostly togher I should have pics up soon. After I put the bottem end togher, It was alot harder to turn by hand I HOPE it`s because of the new rings being so tight against the cylinder walls, it diddn`t seem to be binding just tight, i should have my baby back togher in about a week
, I wonder how much power she`ll have now?

I would replace the oil pump if I was you. You can get one for next to nothing if you are going to spend the money to rebuild the engine, you might as well. I have never reused an oil pump in a rebuild, but its your call.

I would of changed the oil pump but I`m outta money and the builder that put the new spring in says it was still good.
you really should prime the motor with oil before turning it over. this is pretty easy just get an old distributer and take everything on the top og the dist. off and put a drill on it and spin the oil pump with the old dist. no oil on the main and rod bearing would make it turn over pretty hard.
Well I`m SO CLOSE to having the Z28 back toger
the 305 is done now all I need to do is put the 5spd on the 305 and drop them into my Zed
I`ll keep you guys posted I`m hopin to fire her up on mon. wish me luck
