Re: Ultimate Small Block?
Bret (SStrokerAce) at BRE can build a mean SBC. Look at what he's done in the engine masters contests. I'm seriously thinking about just buying a Iron Eagle or Little M block, Brodix CV heads w/ intake manifold, ship it all to him, and tell him to build me a 434 to get as much power possible on pump gas under 6500rpm. Forged internals of course.... cause this puppy will get a DP N2O system too. Tell me that won't be a beast Now if i can only get out of college already....

Re: Ultimate Small Block?
How about a 355 or 383 with forged internals and a simple home made turbo setup? Decent heads with a small cam would make it idle great and get good gas mileage, and when you step on it
The whole setup should be doable for under $7k depending on what you can fab yourself and what parts you use. Just a thought.

Re: Ultimate Small Block?
exactly what I was thinking, personally I love the idea of a small block (under 400 ci) with blower of some sort, just something unique. I think the best small block without a budget would be a banks dual steup on like a 383.

Banks
Why? You spend $6k+ for a log manifold and no intercooler. Much easier to use a shorty header and modify it a bit for a single. If you get really creative, you can build twin headers pretty easily/cheaply.

Re: Ultimate Small Block?
check out combo 71 that would be just about perfect for a small blower or turbo set up street car. it is probably one of the best 383 combo's I've ever seen for a street car

Re: Ultimate Small Block?
Well personally I like the idea of a 383, not too large and not too small. From what I have heard its one of the best streetable sizes. I didnt mean Banks specificallym, I pretty much meant a dual setup that makes over a 1000 hp.

I have something very similar to that, with more compression and less cam lift though.
Here's the specs:
Block: Stock 350 4-bolt that I had given to me years ago. Free is always good.
Crank and Rods: Scat, 9000 series
Pistons/rings: Speed-pro hypereutectics, flat top, engine is about 10.6:1 compression
Camshaft: Comp XR288HR, Intake 236@.050, .520 lift, Exhaust 242@.050, .540 lift, Comp hyd. roller lifters
Cylinder heads: out of the box Dart Pro 1 200cc intake runners, 64cc chamber, angle plug
Intake manifold: RPM Air Gap
Carb: Speed Demon 750, mechanical secondaries, stock jetting
Ignition: MSD 6AL, MSD distributor, Accel 8.8 plug wires with flexible boots
Headers: Hooker Super Comps, 1 3/4 inch primaries, 3" dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers. My exhaust guy did an excellent job, the car doesn't scrape unless it is a high speed bump.
The other parts are in my sig, and although it isn't "fuel efficient" or quiet enough for a daily driver, I have had no reliability problems and basically drive it where I wish.

Re: Ultimate Small Block?
Sounds pretty good but is a 383 all its cracked up to be, I just want to make sure. Plus which do you guys prefer on a small block, a normal shot of nitrous or a blower.

Re: Ultimate Small Block?
A 383 is a nice engine for torque. Lots of fun on the street.
For a street car I'd probably rather have a bottle of nitrous. No heat soak/intercoolers/mass amounts of pipe to deal with. Also, you can buy alot of nitrous for what a blower will cost you. Only bad thing is once the bottle is empty, you're done for the night. That can also be a plus in some cases.

Re: Ultimate Small Block?
If we're talking a 383 LT1, I'd use a Scat 9000 or better crank, a set of Eagle H beams, and an appropriate set of pistons and probably aim for 10.8:1 compression with a set of ported LT1 or LT4 heads and intake. Have a cam ground to match the heads. Then add a TNT nitrous setup along with a set of 42# injectors and a good 255 lph fuel pump.
As far as refilling the bottle... I'd guess a 10lb bottle would need to be refilled about every 6 runs give or take. The last vehicle I had nitrous on was an S10 with a 406 and I only used it once.

Scott Shafiroff builds very nice engines. A tad over $9000 gets you a completed running 600HP 434ci SBC, with an unbeatable warranty. The price may seem high now, but building one similar on your own usually ends up costing much much more.?

I don't think building your own cost more, Mine is well below 9k. The only thing I haven't bought is my electromotive engine management system.. But that scoot engine, would have done me no good, neither would bill mitchell's hardcore products, which I would prefer. I wanted Roller Crower Cam, set up for boost, Roller Lifters, Roller Rockers, 2 Piece timing cover-comp cams- A oil pan MADE for my car, not some of the shelf product. I wanted Dished -20cc dished coated pistons, I went Fuel Injected, So I didn't need a carb, or that sucky intake.. And I like my heads, their aluminum, CNC Right hand cast technology, same as the kool can Fuel injected intake.. We can add some more on there hold on..
Intake = 250
Elbow for intake = 125
Fuel Injectors = 300
TB (1300cfm Monoblade) = 500
Fluidampner = 200
Electromotive Engine Management System = 1800
Cam with Roller lifters and roller rockers = 650
Thats' 3825 + 3500 (short block ) = 7325
That leaves - 9000
$1,625.00
My machine work, assembly, pushrods, bearings, comp cam cover, oil restrictors.. All in my assembly.. and that all only cost me 1200 with dyno sheet.. That leaves 425.00..
My engine made 655hrspwr and 676lbs of torque, N/A No boost, no nos.. Also no Electromotive Fuel management system, it was dyno'd with a single plane and a holley dominator 1150.. So add 150 cfm, and the engine management system I should be seeing very positive numbers, for way under 9k.. Warranty you scream.. I will poop in a box and mail it to you and stick a warranty sticker on it if that's what will help you sleep better at night..
