tuning vortec motor
tuning vortec motor
to anyone that can help. I replaced my stcok 305 tpi with the vortec crate motor. I bought the tpi intake and have the car assembled and running. however the car runs very choppy at idle and has trouble idling ( wont idle at all when its cold) but as soon as I give it a little gas it runs very smooth and it pulls very strong. What can I do to get it to idle normally and what should the timing and fuel pressure be set at. any advice will help
thanks Shawn

Congrats on your purchase......Here is what I have done to the crate to get it running right. First off, you need to get you an Ed Wright chip from www.fastchips.com. MAKES ALL THE IDLEING PROBLEMS DISAPPEAR!!!! Then you need to have your Fuel pressure set about 47-48 PSI. I know my sig says 50 PSI, but I changed it yesterday to 48 PSI and that solved alot demons top end. Now,,,,Staying on the fuel side, You might want to look into getting 24 lb injectors. Accel makes some , but if you can score some off a used L98...do it. What else....Oh yeah TIMING!!! The specs call for 10 * BTDC, but I got alot of pinging (detonation), so I set mine at 6 * BTDC and it has ran fine since. Hope this helps you a little...BTW Be prepared to get a tranny rebuild
.....Mine was on the way out and the new power pushed it over the limit!!!!

thanks for the info, I have a 350 chip in it but I heard it would be good to get a custom chip, so I will work on that and I do have 24lb injectors on it. by the what what are your best e.t.and what mile an hour did you pull. thanks again

Hey, the motor I had before I did my 406 was a Vortec headed 355, all it had was .030 over a set of cheap cast flattops, out of the box Vortecs- and a performer RPM intake w/ a vac sec. 750 holley, small .488/.292 cam, At the strip it ran best with NO more than 32-34 deg TOTAL timing, I read this was due to the "fast burn" chamber design. With a TH350 and a 3.73 in the 10-bolt it ran 8.0's-8.20's (1/8th mi.)depending on the weather, and a best of 7.25 with a 150 shot from a Snpier nitrous setup. I hope this helps.
