Well, after calling around yesterday to some trans shops most will not rebuild unless you bring the car in. It's just a way for them to get more money. But I found a place about 20 miles from my house and they said they would do a complete rebuild for $955 with an 18 month 18k mile warranty. They also said they do about 500 700r4's a year. They told me most of them are from Trucks and Vans. I didn't know they had them in the late 80's early 90's and they told me it's a very universal trans that gm used. I know I should convert to a manual trans, but here's the story. When I bought my 2001 camaro ss brand new (auto) I did a test drive with a 6 speed and I did some serious damage to the car and almost had to buy it. To make a long story short I accidently down shifted to 1st gear at 70mph. I did buy my ss from the same dealer because I felt so bad. They said the repair bill was about $2000 and most of the mechanics thought it was really funny, and said the trans never should have been able to down shift to 1st at that speed in the newer cars. So, a manual is not a good choice for me. So, that's why I'm a little stuck on getting the auto repaired.

70 MPH downshift into 1st ...... Ouch! 955.00 seems a bit pricey but atleast there is the warranty. Just make sure you seat the Torque converter properly!

The trans shop told me that they also supply a rebuilt torque converter and that they need mine for a core. They also said they would have it fully seated with a very thin metal strap that you cut off once it's installed so it can't move. But, if something should happen how do you make sure it's seated. I cannot find in the Chiltons manual anywhere where it tells you how to properly to this. By the way, is there a better manual than the chiltons, or are they all about the same.

A shop manual is the best but it cost over 100.00 .
Thats good that they already have the TC attached, but if you have to take it off, if memory serves me right pull the TC as far forward and then slowly spin it clockwise untill you hear and feel 3 faint click noises, it should be then seated, you MAY be able to barely fit your index finger between the back side of the TC and the pump on the Trans.

Thanks for the info, the transmission is going to the shop on Thursday or Friday and it's going to be about 5-7 days turn around. I'll post when I get it back. I'm sure I'll have a few questions while I'm installing so please check back in about 7-10 days. You have been a big help!

Still waiting to get it back from the shop. Just talked with them today and they told me maybe next wednesday. The local Army recruiter's car and a local school districts bus both took a crap. They said with the service contract that they have with them that they get priority over every one else. But, one good thing is they are going to knock off $250 on the rebuild. I can wait another few days to save that kind of money. Besides I have two other cars and a truck to drive. One question I do have off the top of my head is how do you put the torque arm back in. I have all of the weight off the suspension and it looks like a challenge to put back in. (still connected to the rear end)

I usually disassemble the T.A. mounting bracket when removing, just take loosen it on the bottom bolt then pull the T.A. down, then move up into the bracket, tighten it and your all set!

Well, I got the transmission back today and it's going in tomorrow night after work. Hopefully it won't take more than 4-5 hours. I'm looking for some torque values but cannot find them in my chiltons book. Does anybody know the following:

1. Transmission to engine bolts torque
2. Flywheel to torque converter bolts torque
3. Transmisson cross member bolts torque

The transmission was put in last night and I would say I'm about 85% done. I kind of ran into a little problem. The transmission shop told me that when the transmission was put in, that I would only have to move the torque converter about 1/16 of an inch to mate up with the flywheel. I have almost a 1/4 inch. Now this is not the original torque converter. It is a rebuilt from the transmission shop. What do I do. Should I move it out that 1/4 inch to mate to the flywheel? I'll be working on it again after work tonight. If someone could please respond in the next 12 hrs. it would be great. Thanks!!!
