how much power boost are you looking??

something small and cheap would be an LT1 cam or LT4 hotcam.

neither an LT1 nor an LT4 cam will even fit inside there unless he's going to swap blocks, he needs a drive gear for his distributor

What are most you guys running now in a stock block? I'm really looking for the best off the shelf with an rpm range from 2500 - 5600. What kinda heads can I use on it?

Comp Cams has a few cams that are made for TPI cars, check out their website and look around.

www.compcams.com

But try to figure out how fast/how much power you want before you do anything b/c most guys wanting to go fast ditch the TPI intake in favor of something that actually flows some air....or you could spend way too much money on a aftermarket lower plenum and then another $350 on a set of runners, then your still in need of a chip to be burned.

I had a 305 TPI and blew it up,stuck a brand new 350 in it and had that for a while and with the 305 chip,Hedman headers and adjustable fuel pressure reg. it ran damn good for what it was...9.8 @ 71-72 mph w/ a 2.1-2.2 60 ft. with 2.73 gears and no traction obviously.

If your fine w/ a quick 13 second car, than stick w/ the L98 and mod it...if your lookin to go faster than that or more than 400HP,I'd look into getting a different intake like a Holley Stealth Ram,or if its not a daily driver do like I did and swap it to a carb.

Hope this helps some.

Thanks for the input, I was planning on carbing it. It's not really going to be a street car, I want to make it into a good bracket car. The car is a 79 malibu.

I'm pretty sure this will work also. LT1 cams still have the distributor gear to drive the oil pump. May need to shorten the dowel pin to make it work.

A search may verify

Well ****,if all you want is a cheap bracket car, than all you want pretty much is the long block and sell the stock heads off of it on ebay and buy the ones you want. Jegs and Summit both sell aluminum heads now w/ their name on them, but are made from a big company...I know the Jegs ones are made by Canfield, but im not sure about the Summit ones. OR,get a set of hopped up Vortec heads for fairly cheap (for heads that is) and pick a decent cam/intake to match.

Also,if you dont want the TPI setup, they do decent money on Ebay, especially if you have the wireing harness, computer, and MAF if its a pre-90 car.

It's great! once you have it tuned. I like the fact the car sounds like it wants to eat the car next to me
