Re: Which timing chain and gear?

You'll always buy them as chain and gear set. If the chain is stretched, chances are the gears are also worn.

Cloyes is the best ones to buy but just about any good brand name set will work. Just stay away from factory sets unless you're building a 100,000+ mile replacement engine. The factory sets are quiet and designed to last a long time.

A true roller chain has little rollers that ride on the gears and not just a pin that rotates in the links. High end gears have a torrington bearing on the back of the cam gear so there's less friction against the block.

Re: Which timing chain and gear?

I have a set of cloyes timing chain. It was going on my friends 86 Z-28 but he is going with an aftermarket roller cam. This will work on both 305 and 350. Yours for $40.00 shipped.

Re: Which timing chain and gear?

If you are still thinking about ordering a comp cams kit, they send a double roller timing chain with it. Not a high-performance one, but no chain is anymore......

Re: Which timing chain and gear?

Well, I as a matter of fact; I AM still looking to buy a comp-cam. Actually, i WILL buy one; as soon as I get the money. Will the chain come w/ a gear as well (from jegs..)? Hey ZRS.. if that chain/gear will work w/ my new comp-cam I am getting, I will DEFFENINTLY keep you in mind. As I hope you do w/ me as well!

BTW.. if comp DOES sell the chain AND gear, how much extra would it be?
Thanx a TON guys!

Re: Which timing chain and gear?

I have Cloyes True Roller and when I changed cam, I noticed a little strech so I changed the chain only. You have to inspect the gears tho to make sure they are ok.

Screw the chain, go with timing gears Matt. ( If you can find a set that will work with the knock sensor. Im still trying to find one.) Plus, with gears, you will get a nice high pitched whine sound.

Re: Which timing chain and gear?

Well, w/ the engine clocking in at 200k, the chain AND the gear are deffinently toast. I have thought about gears, and it would be kool, but I dont want people being under the impression that the car is s/c'd. Hey ZRS.. how many miles on the chain/gear?

Re: Which timing chain and gear?

Well, if the whine isn't your thing, Matt, then get a quiet set. They make gears that are quiet too.

Re: Which timing chain and gear?

ZRS.. do you know if that set will work with my cam from Comp Cams? I have heard that you need a certain chain/gear sometimes. Is this true? I am really interested in your set

BTW Jon.. that is a good idea, but I think I might buy this one off of ZRS.. can't beat the price.

Re: Which timing chain and gear?

I am not sure if the whine will be picked up by the KS. Anyways, if you wanted a quiet set, get a chain. If you are trying to give people the impression you have a SC then go for gears. I wouldn't. It is not that hard to change chains, is it? You don't have to remove the cam to make it happen.

Re: Which timing chain and gear?

Sorry to late, used it on a 35o build. Here is a link for a timing on Ebay for a good price. This will work so long as you are not using a roller cam.
