Timing
I have a 355cid motor with hyperutectic pistons. What kind of timing can I run. I have it at 8* now and the new motor is broken in and am ready to go all out.

Man, no-one ever replies to a topic about timing. I've tried a number of times and they alwayse say "start at 8 and work your way up until you find the best improvement without detinating"
I could have figufred that out myself, right!??! Anyway, I think 12 is about as much as you'd want to go. It may even be a little too high. Its hard to say cause those pistons are still fairly new on the market. BTW... I would love to see your car. Since your in Richmond we should meet sometime. |

Since your in Richmond we should meet sometime.</font> you gotta use your ears, and eyes, and other senses to tune a car, not a book, it can merely give suggestions, an old motor head friend that has been there and done it before, can be alot of help, personally my car has considerably more base timing than 12 , i can't remember what it is, nor can i check because its currently sitting on a stand ------------------ 84' Firebird, 305ci lg4, 700R4, 288/292 duration .450/.460 lift,Edelbrock Performer intake, Holley 600cfm 4 barrel, K&N filter, Pacesetter Headers, 3'single exhuast, dual out muffler, no cat,Motive 3.73's and Auburn Posi 1/4mile 15.17sec @ 92.5mph currently in pieces, for manual swap |
Hey IROC305 lets do it. Always ready to see a fellow F-body with new ideas. Hey what exhaust are you running? I asked in the AFPR post but I guess you didnt see it. I saw you leave Blockbuster and your car sounded sweet. I actually just met another guy with a 1991 white Z28 with a 305 5speed 1LE R7U. Yes the Players Challange and I even checked the RPO codes to make sure. Nice guy. His name is Darren I think and he even has the video showing his car being raced in the Players Challange series. I think he lives on Aquila road just behind McNair. Thanks to both you guys for the advice. Im just a little paranoid.

I've got Edelbrock headers, gutted cat, 3" headers back into a flowmaster muffler, and dressed up with the 95 Camaro tips!
I have no idea what sereis the muffler is cause I bout the car with it in already and the guy I bought it off of forgot too. With the new motor I'll just be changing the headers over to the SLP (1 3/4" shorties). I would love to get the Long Tubes but my cars lowered and I really don't feel like listening to hte exhaust bottoming out over speed bumps. |
Cool. I guess my car must sound very similar. I have the same setup but I have a cat that I can just clamp in and take out.

Not necisarily (sp?)! You've got an extra 50 cubic inches and I'm sure you have more compression and a larger cam than I do.
I haven't heard yours yet but I'm guessing it would probably be a little louder and a faster paced rumble with a lower note. Mines kind of a slow rumble and a mid range note because of the lower compression and lack of a good cam. My exhaust really doesn't get too loud until about 2500 rpm and up! I really can't wiat to hear what my new motor will sound like! |

If it is carb, you can buy a knock unit thingy that will screw into your block and monitor the knocking of the engine and come out as a LED display. If it is modified, like mine, I set it to 6 deg and let the custom chip take over. We customed the chip by taking readings and sending it to www.fasterproms.com and they burnt a chip and we took more readings and burnt it again. Now on WOT, it will knock about 1 - 2 degrees throughout the run which is kinda normal.

Yeah, he works at Coast Capital in the mall. I'll try to get something together were we can all meet. Or we can wait until the next club cruise and cruise up to Surrey together.

Your car sounds awsome! You can really tell its putting out some power just by the exhaust. I'm going to check on the local board to see if anyone knows when the next cruise is. Should be one coming up real soon! Besides that, we can always cruise out to Mission and have a few passes! |

Edelbrock headers->custom 3" no cat Y pipe-->3" into 2 chamber flowmaster--> 3" staimless tips. My cam and heads definetly changed the sound to a lower note but it sounded great before too.

Theres speculation that ther is a cruise this Saturday!!!
Not sure if its true or who's going. We usually meet at the Red Robin's around the corner and then cruise down to Surrey Place Mall as a group. Check out the posts in the Pacific Northwest Forum. There should be something up and going pretty soon on the cruise. |
OK! The cruise is a go!! This Saturday at 5:00 we meet at Red Robin in Guildford mall and then we cruise as a group out to Surrey Place mall.

Yah that will work. Only I cant leave early cause Im locking up and all the techs will freak if I leave them stuck with a car on the hoist. You still should bring the car though. Its really not that big of a deal. The car just needs a little TLC and a little paint touch up. Plus when it is done everyone will see the work you have put in. Plus its a 25th anniversary. Gotta bring her out.

Actaully, we've changed the meet time to 6:00 so if we leave Richmond around 5:00-5:30 it will give us plenty of time!
Suck it up Pablo and bring out the Jalopy!!! I brought my car out when it had the grey primered hood. IMHO that is way worse than a few dents and some paint work. |

Its still on... I'm not sure I'll have my transmission done by then but regardless I'lll be going!
I was thinking of leaving around 3:00 but now m sister wants to come. So... Leave Richmond at about 3:10 pick up my sister in Ladner at her work and be on our way by 3:20-3:30. How does that sound? |
