Timing

I have a 355cid motor with hyperutectic pistons. What kind of timing can I run. I have it at 8* now and the new motor is broken in and am ready to go all out.

irocz383 08-09-2002 11:28 AM

Man, no-one ever replies to a topic about timing. I've tried a number of times and they alwayse say "start at 8 and work your way up until you find the best improvement without detinating"

I could have figufred that out myself, right!??!

Anyway, I think 12 is about as much as you'd want to go. It may even be a little too high. Its hard to say cause those pistons are still fairly new on the market.

BTW... I would love to see your car. Since your in Richmond we should meet sometime.

the reason people say that is because thats what you have to do with a modified car, since every engine is a little different, you can only give some one a resonable starting point, if someone said, everybody set your timing at exactly 9 degrees, there would be alot of angry people, cuz there cars would run like $hit,

you gotta use your ears, and eyes, and other senses to tune a car, not a book, it can merely give suggestions, an old motor head friend that has been there and done it before, can be alot of help,

personally my car has considerably more base timing than 12 , i can't remember what it is, nor can i check because its currently sitting on a stand

Hey IROC305 lets do it. Always ready to see a fellow F-body with new ideas. Hey what exhaust are you running? I asked in the AFPR post but I guess you didnt see it. I saw you leave Blockbuster and your car sounded sweet. I actually just met another guy with a 1991 white Z28 with a 305 5speed 1LE R7U. Yes the Players Challange and I even checked the RPO codes to make sure. Nice guy. His name is Darren I think and he even has the video showing his car being raced in the Players Challange series. I think he lives on Aquila road just behind McNair. Thanks to both you guys for the advice. Im just a little paranoid.

irocz383 08-09-2002 12:23 PM

I've got Edelbrock headers, gutted cat, 3" headers back into a flowmaster muffler, and dressed up with the 95 Camaro tips!

I have no idea what sereis the muffler is cause I bout the car with it in already and the guy I bought it off of forgot too.

With the new motor I'll just be changing the headers over to the SLP (1 3/4" shorties). I would love to get the Long Tubes but my cars lowered and I really don't feel like listening to hte exhaust bottoming out over speed bumps.

Bristol 08-09-2002 12:56 PM

Cool. I guess my car must sound very similar. I have the same setup but I have a cat that I can just clamp in and take out.

irocz383 08-09-2002 01:44 PM

Not necisarily (sp?)! You've got an extra 50 cubic inches and I'm sure you have more compression and a larger cam than I do.

I haven't heard yours yet but I'm guessing it would probably be a little louder and a faster paced rumble with a lower note. Mines kind of a slow rumble and a mid range note because of the lower compression and lack of a good cam. My exhaust really doesn't get too loud until about 2500 rpm and up!

I really can't wiat to hear what my new motor will sound like!

irocz383 08-09-2002 01:49 PM

Actually... heres my sig. I think I've got just about everyhting covered in there!

Hey irocz305 in thet Team F-Body picture, is the black RAM AIR with the cage owned by a guy named Sean?

aklim 08-09-2002 06:11 PM

If it is carb, you can buy a knock unit thingy that will screw into your block and monitor the knocking of the engine and come out as a LED display. If it is modified, like mine, I set it to 6 deg and let the custom chip take over. We customed the chip by taking readings and sending it to www.fasterproms.com and they burnt a chip and we took more readings and burnt it again. Now on WOT, it will knock about 1 - 2 degrees throughout the run which is kinda normal.

Whens a good time for ya to meet? Give me a shout on my cell 778-772-9393. Just don't dial 604 cause 778 is the new area code for most new numbers. Its still local so long distance charges don't apply.

Bristol 08-12-2002 01:43 PM

irocz383 08-12-2002 01:50 PM

I just realized I don't know your name!!!

I'm Ken. I'll see if Ican get my buddy Pablo (G-ride-z28)(the black 92) to come along too.

Bristol 08-12-2002 02:16 PM

My name is Kris. Shawn works with my mom and he mentioned to her that he was involved in a group of guys with these cars but I never really knew who or where. Does your buddy work at Richmond Ctr?

irocz383 08-12-2002 06:41 PM

Yeah, he works at Coast Capital in the mall. I'll try to get something together were we can all meet. Or we can wait until the next club cruise and cruise up to Surrey together.

How about Mission... Do you go up there at all? I'm probably going up there this Friday and next Friday.

Bristol 08-12-2002 06:47 PM

Tell him my girlfriend liked his burnout on the roof by staff parking next to the Famous Players!

Bristol 08-13-2002 01:51 AM

Did you guys see the face of that kid in the Stang tonight when we left?! I thought he **** his pants when he saw the 3 Zs coming towards him. Anyways Ken and Paublo I had fun tonight. Lets do it again soon and when are these cruises? Hey how did my car sound? Never really heard it from outside before.

irocz383 08-13-2002 11:14 AM

Yeah that was pricless!!!

Your car sounds awsome! You can really tell its putting out some power just by the exhaust.

I'm going to check on the local board to see if anyone knows when the next cruise is. Should be one coming up real soon!

Besides that, we can always cruise out to Mission and have a few passes!

G-RideZ28 08-13-2002 11:27 AM

hey kris, it was nice meeting you and your car, and BTW it sounds killer, thats the exhaust note i want. We should go cruisin more often... http://web.camaross.com/bb/smile.gif http://web.camaross.com/bb/biggrin.gif

Edelbrock headers->custom 3" no cat Y pipe-->3" into 2 chamber flowmaster--> 3" staimless tips. My cam and heads definetly changed the sound to a lower note but it sounded great before too.

irocz383 08-13-2002 02:02 PM

Theres speculation that ther is a cruise this Saturday!!!

Not sure if its true or who's going. We usually meet at the Red Robin's around the corner and then cruise down to Surrey Place Mall as a group.

Check out the posts in the Pacific Northwest Forum. There should be something up and going pretty soon on the cruise.

irocz383 08-13-2002 06:41 PM

OK! The cruise is a go!! This Saturday at 5:00 we meet at Red Robin in Guildford mall and then we cruise as a group out to Surrey Place mall.

If ya want we can cruise out to Surrey together too.

Bristol 08-13-2002 07:44 PM

I guess I will have to meet you out there cause I have to work until 4:30pm. But yah Im up for it!

G-RideZ28 08-13-2002 10:02 PM

hey kris, i have to work till 4:30 too, if you want we can meet up and go at the same time, im probably not going to take my car since it looks like a jalopy POS right now http://web.camaross.com/bb/smile.gif, but that will change... http://web.camaross.com/bb/biggrin.gif

so ya, just let me know you got my cell if not ill give it to you again 604-338-2075

hey ken, would you wait for us to get of work?so then we can cruise up there at the same time, (I might be able to sneak out of work a bit earlier but it depends...)

Yah that will work. Only I cant leave early cause Im locking up and all the techs will freak if I leave them stuck with a car on the hoist. You still should bring the car though. Its really not that big of a deal. The car just needs a little TLC and a little paint touch up. Plus when it is done everyone will see the work you have put in. Plus its a 25th anniversary. Gotta bring her out.

irocz383 08-14-2002 11:17 AM

Actaully, we've changed the meet time to 6:00 so if we leave Richmond around 5:00-5:30 it will give us plenty of time!

Suck it up Pablo and bring out the Jalopy!!!
I brought my car out when it had the grey primered hood. IMHO that is way worse than a few dents and some paint work.

Bristol 08-16-2002 08:26 PM

Hey Ken and Paublo is the cruise still on? If it is Im gonna have to meet you guys out there cause I have an important thing to take care of at 6pm and wont be rolling till 6:30pm. Where do you guys think you will be at around 7pm?

G-RideZ28 08-17-2002 11:01 AM

hey kris, there's no (u) in my name... http://web.camaross.com/bb/smile.gif http://web.camaross.com/bb/biggrin.gif

anyways around 7pm we should be at the surrey place mall but it depends at what time the guys from the club are gonna show up at guilford mall (red robin) and if they are gonna be grabing a bite to eat, but what you should do is give either me or ken a call just to confirm where we are, kens cell is 778-772-9393 and mine is 604-338-2075.

see u out there,

I'm still not sure if I would be taking the day off work or not yet. If not you can always follow Richard to the were I'm supposed to meet him.

I'll probably be taking the day off though!

Bristol 08-19-2002 07:32 PM

Okay. Im off at 2:30pm but thats the earliest I can do. We are just too busy.. but thats good for my bonus...let me know.

G-RideZ28 08-20-2002 02:15 AM

Bristol 08-22-2002 02:07 PM
