check out this

B&M Mega Shifter

I had the megashifter for about 3 years and I loved it.... once it was adjusted correctly and after i had shaved off the tab on the front that pokes out when you downshift. You can bang as hard as you want and it will only go up or down 1 gear at a time. You only have to pull up on the t-handle to shift from park, as opposed to having to pull the lever on each shift.

there are more than a few options out there

Well, any shifter will work i fyou can handle a little fabrication. We put a Pro Stick in my buddy's IROC, it just required a 1.5" thick spacer

b&m also has a ratchet shifter that is for 82-92 f-bodies w/4 speed it doesn't stop before going into neutral but it will only go one gear at a time so as long as you remember to count shifts you will be fine
