Thumbs up Theoretically speaking, how much improvement will...

I'm starting with a mostly-stock '89 L98 with a few mods - 1-3/4" SLP headers/Y-pipe, high-flow cat, 3" muffler, larger injectors, ported intake, stock iron heads (milled .005" w/ mild porting & a 3-angle valve job), nearly all of the free mods, MSD coil, plug wires, cold-air from outside the engine compartment, airfoil, removed A/C, etc. (plus some other stuff that doesn't add to the rwhp).

Sitting on the shelf awaiting installation I've got a StealthRam intake, & MSD 6AL ignition box (as well as SFCs & a tranny cooler). I also now have the cash for the AFR 195 cylinder heads I've been wanting, & I'll have a compatible Comp cam in time for summer cruising.

My question is this - Once I get the heads/cam/intake/ignition box installed, about how much improvement will I see? (Yeah, I know that a lot depends on which cam I get, figure something that'll pass emissions, live on pump gas, & still be moderately big...)

Ugh. Seems like I could get a lot better value for my $2000 (or so) doing almost anything else...

I sure hope that's a bit on the low side, otherwise I'm going to be reconsidering whether I want to stick w/ F-bods...

Oh yeah, I've been there quite a few times - but the problem is that none of the cars listed there would really match up with the configuration I'll have when I'm done with this "Phase I" of my mods...

I suppose that the closest one would probably be Steve Masterson's (minus the N2O), but that brings up the other issue - a lot of the cars there don't have any dyno or 1/4 times listed, so it's a bit more like a "gallery" than a tech data repository.

Thanks for the link though!

then when you get your done, add it to the list. one in particular, mike85tpi, has done so much swapping of intakes on his motor, it's exhausting. just visit his site for more info on that.

Ok, my turn to chime in.....Your setup will have very good power. However I see that your cam choice will definately be limited. If you need to pass emissions you will have a much less agressive cam. I will guess and pretend you are gonna use a cam like a LT4 hotcam, cuz its ok in size and it can pass emissions. With your combo and this cam you will make over 400HP, probably somewhere around 410-435hp at the crank. You will sacrifice some bottom end and some torque but your car will perform well. Why is everyone so caught up in peak power these days? Are you interested in making your car perform better or are you looking to get the thing dyno'd and go around showing the numbers off. If you like your car and want it to have more performance, then mod the thing.....search around this board and thirdgen.org and you will find some similar combos, and you can check out their numbers.

Good to hear.

I'm not too concerned with bottom end, if I was given one wish it would be to have torque similar to a race car that I used to work on - You couldn't actually call it a torque "curve", because that sucker looked like a pool table (it just never dropped)!

Why is everyone so caught up in peak power these days? Are you interested in making your car perform better or are you looking to get the thing dyno'd and go around showing the numbers off?
That's a real good point - but I think that what I (and the other guy who posted a similar question here) am looking for is to get some rough idea of how much improvement we can expect for the time, effort & money we put into the car(s).

It's definitely lame to strut around with a dyno sheet - but it's also a bit stupid (IMHO) to throw a combination together without trying to get some idea of where it'll get you in the end.

If you like your car and want it to have more performance, then mod the thing.....search around this board and thirdgen.org and you will find some similar combos, and you can check out their numbers.
That's a good suggestion - for whatever reason checking out similar combos on thirdgen.org never entered my mind...

Thanks for the reply!
