TH350 short/long tailshaft
TH350 short/long tailshaft
I have a turbo350 for my car with the short tailshaft.
If I were to buy a long tailshaft would it just bolt right up to my trans? what has to be done to switch the tailshafts? I already got the B&M kit for the crossmember and torque arm, but now I am stuck on the driveshaft/tailshaft situation.
thanks for the help!!

The short tailshaft is 6" long. The long tailshaft is 9" long. The difference isn't just the housing but the output shaft in the tranny. You can switch it over but that means pulling the tranny and stripping it right down to the back end. When reassembling, the tailshaft goes in first then all the rest of the internal parts.
If you already have a short tailshaft and driveshaft then why would you want to switch to a long tailshaft and use a shorter driveshaft? The B&M torque arm kit attaches to the rear housing mount bolts so that position doesn't change. The only thing that may affect you is if you have a driveshaft loop. It has to be within 6" of the u-joint. If you put the longer tranny in, the loop will be in the wrong position.

on an 85-92 camaro if u dont want to have to get a new driveshaft it is best to use a long tail trans i had a long tail 350 in my 89 and all i had to get is the conversion kit for the tq arm and trans mount b&m makes it
350 tails
short tailshaft is 6" intermediate is 9" and longtail is 12".i just did the swap using a intermediate tail.used the stock driveline.it would probably be best for you to get your driveshaft lengthened or get one out of an 82' with a 200 trans.

LOL
not to flame but your wrong on the tailshaft sizes.i have been building 350th's since before the 3rd gens existed.6",9" and the rare 12".there is no 4".the only thing shorter than a 6" is the 4wd tail.i think you may be confusing it with a 400th which does have a 4" tail, but is the same overall length as a 350 w/6" tail.

the guy didnt ask what the size is of the tail shaft is. what would make it easy to do the swap. i have done the swap and used my stock 700r4 drive shaft out of an 89 camaro. the 350 trans that i used waz a long tail and i had no problems with it going in. buy the conversion kit and it should go fine. if u have a short tail get a drive shaft made.
