Not worth the trouble and for the extra ponies, look for Mustangs.

You don't really get anything. It may lower the temperature for the MAT sensor in the plenum if you are running an SD system, and which in turn will make things run a bit richer....just a tiny bit, as the temperature shift is small to negligible.

What you do get is convenience. You no longer need to worry about spilling/draining coolant when you take off your TB, plenum and runners. You'd still need to drain if you take off your intake manifold.

Most of these cheap/freebie mods are BS and don't do jack.

ALL mods, no matter how small, help out in the big picture. The by-pass, airfoil, K&N, Gutted MAF, gutted air boxes, ramair (freebie type), ported plenum (just the egr walls), bump timing, MSD ignition, 8.8mm plug wires, etc......All of these mods combined can give you a better dyno pull than a motor with none of these.

No matter how small.....DO IT!!!

Thumbs up

On Camaros they have the dual filter set up...what guys do is cut out most of those baffles in the filter boxes to get some more air into the engine. The ram air mod I saw at www.thirdgen.org and it is also for Camaros. NEVER let anyone deter you from modding your car (unless you keep it totally original).

Don't know about thrid gens but on an LT1, the throttle body bypass is worth 6 RWHP!!. Check out www.ws6.com. I think fuel injected third gens should reap the same benefits because they have the same throttle body.

Nope. If you take up PROM programming you'll quickly debunk all these BS mods, and you'll find out what they really do. All they do is make you tend to run a bit rich. If you pick up 6 RWHP from it, then your tune is not good and were probably running a bit lean at WOT. Once you've got a good tune in, you don't gain squat from these mods.

Get a scanner and monitor the intake temperature as monitored by the MAT. Do that before the mod and then do that after. Let us know how it turns out. Is the intake temperature, as monitored by the computer, vastly different?

The only mods that has any merit are the porting of the plenum and the gutting of the airbox. For a stock LB9 or L98 the airbox, as is, breathes plenty for it.

As for bumping timing, perhaps that may be good, it depends on the car. For that, I'd rather tweak the timing curves in the PROM and leave the base timing at 6*. Some cars, will hit knock retard at WOT hurting your performance.

What feels fast on the butt dyno isn't necessarily fast. Next thing you know, you'll pick up 6RWHP by putting on chrome plated valve covers.

You know what the biggest BS has to be? The TPIS recommended mod of bumping the fuel pressure through an AFPR above stock. Again, making one run rich. Once again, on a properly tuned PROM, that hurts performance. That has been proven many times over, yet the uninformed think it's an uber mod because of some BS stats posted by TPIS in their book.

If you really want to tune your car, take up PROM programming, do the real mods such as porting the intake, bigger runners, bigger intake manifold, cam, heads, headers, catback, etc. and then tune that in the PROM. Need more fuel at a certain stage, not a problem, need more timing, again, not a problem.

Question

So by making your engine move more air....Because your engine is basically an air pump.....You will NOT see any gains???? The more air you move, the faster you will and CAN be. I do agree that PROM tuning does help out....but it will not move more air than the simple mods I listed.

What are you talking about? How much air is consumed is based upon the power output of the engine. To make 100hp, you consume a certain amount, to make 200, you consume another set amount. If you don't have the power to consume beyond the bandwidth of the stock air box, then you just don't. Simple as that. It's like cutting a hose with a knot in it, only in the wrong spot.

If you don't know where your bottlenecks are, then you are just throwing crap onto your engine. If you want a real good low cost mod that will actually have gains, port your stock intake manifold. That and headers will get you on your way, more so than gutting airboxes and doing throttle body bypasses. Those are the 2 big areas on a stock TPI system.

Gee, the people with BS mods really think they are gaining that much Performance for nothing. Not on a stock ECM & Prom controlled engine.

Talking

I am just saying that any mod (minor or not) will make some kind of difference...if not now, then in the future. Just imagine you port your intake and slap some headers on there...Yeah you get instant gratification. Now add all the little things to those mods and you get even more gratification. If he cannot afford headers, cat back, high flow runners, heads, cam etc. etc. then why not do the simple minor mods???

I agree 100% with you on the major mods.....No need debating this any longer. I feel if I have not done any of the minor mods, I would have missed out on some power down the road (when I cut off the knot in the hose )

As for the AFPR.....I am glad I put it on the ole' L98...'cause now I have the GM 350 HO Crate and I need that little extra fuel (Fastchip prom already set up for it)

Just remenber you don't make Horsepower by addition.
You can't just add up all the minor mods and say you gained "X"
amount of Horsepower, sorry it dosen't work that way.

Angry

I AM NOT SAYING IT WORKS THAT WAY!!!!!! I am saying that these little mods in addition to mods down the road will show better performance, then just major mods.

You uncork as much air as you can and your intake will move more air. Lets say you flow 650 cfm, but your air cleaner only allows 400 cfm of air flow. You are telling me that by putting on an aftermarket air cleaner (that flows 650cfm or more) will not help????

Minor mods are called minor for a reason.......THEY ARE MINOR!!
But they have some effect.

Add minor mods with major mods and you have a happy motor

WHEW!!!

Just someone out there agree that minor mods will help your major mods and this thread can rest.

Well I see you quit on the TPI mods and now trying your ideas on a Carb set-up. Now your more Air theory will work with a Carb.
