Talk me out of DD'ing a low mile 3rd gen

considering purchasing a low mile 3rd Gen DD. the particular car I have in mind was used as a scca factory stock race car. Pretty much bone stock other than a rollcage. 305 5 speed.

This would be a fair weather DD. Have a cherokee for the winter.

My drive to the office is about 10 miles. and I suspect the camaro will do better on mileage (especially highway for longer trips) than my cherokee I'm driving now. (3 inch lift on 31's).

I figure it's either this or evo/wrx/gto. I really don't want the payments on one of those, but could afford it.

Would hopefully have it paid off in 1.5 - 2 years, and then the fun begins.

I have a T-56, and gm 330 H.O. sitting in the garage that would go in eventually. Probably start will all supporting mods/ bolt ons first as time money allows, when they're done go for the swap.

What say YE?

I don't see why not! Roll bars and 5-point harnesses are cool. However after five years of climbing over my bar, I see the advantages of swingouts. It was really refreshing to ride in Greg Frank's IROC with semi-stock suspension and no rollbar a few weekends ago. So that said, as a DD, you may get tired of that bar. Same thing with suspension: If you go full-race with rod ends and all the other stuff, you will tire of it eventually.

I recently did 1600 miles in two days worth of driving to Memphis & back, and that was my limit. My suggestion is to install the T56 but don't go too crazy with mods if you want it to stay a daily driver. Greg F. got 31 MPG on the highway with his 350 TPI motor and a six-speed. I got 22.

I'm pretty sure the front bars are swing outs. If not from the pictures, they appear to cross pretty low. T-56 would probably go in this winter. Just need to buy a new clutch. I blew it out, and then parted my s-10 the drivetrain was in.

anybody else?

reliability concerns?

I'd keep it to a minimum. 2-3 days a week--in dry weather.
Shes old and deserves to be pampered. More you drive a car the greater the risk is that something will happen to it.

I have absolutely no problem driving a low mileage car. If I buy it, It will be an everyday driver in the summer.

man do you guys have glass smooth roads?

I would not want to drive mine every day---car feels decent on normal roads, great on perfect roads but loses it composure on not so good roads---it shows its many imperfections---weak chasiss, bump, creaks ect.

I guess I can be thankful for the great sense of refinement in my Cobalt---sure is kinda dull though :P

I DD my 91RS. It has 201k on it (about 6k on the new L98). I dont see a problem with it. I mean, why even get it if all you are going to do is park it and stare at it? Granted, the 12-13 mpg i get city driving here in Southern Cali (at 4.10 a gallon) sucks, but I have never had a problem with ride quality (except for RR tracks...)

I agree that the roll bar and harness might get pretty old after a while... I had a friend long ago with a Chevelle and it had a roll bar, and I hated riding with him because of that. I also had a friend with a Civic that had the Racaro (I think) seats and the harness, and latching that harness was SOOO annoying...

But if you would be ok with the harness and roll bar, i say def go for it!!!

I guess I view them as a rare and preciouis comodity---they are pretty rare up here. (mine is in excellent shape)

Plus it looks so pretty parked in the garage---not a speck of dust on it
