Tach adjustment

My tach is all out of wack....
I didnt mean to rhyme...well pretty much during driving it just sits with the needle buried...its obviously not sitting that high for all of the obvious reasons...and when idling it stays around 4000 when it isnt idling that high...is there any way i can do a tach adjustment myself or should i bring it to the shop?
or is the tach possibly shot?
thanks Ron

Shot...get a auto meter, or repair yours although I suggest the first option VERY strongly do to the fact that third gen guages are notoriously crappy

Just forget the stock tack. get an aftermarket one. I picked up a Sunpro Super Tach II for $35 at auto zone, and it is right on with what the mech who set my timing said the rpm's actually were at idle in park.
