T5 trans

Hey I've got an 82 z28 and it came with a 3 speed automatic trans. The lock-up doesn't work and sometimes it won't shift out of first so i just want to do a T5 conversion but it's so hard to find one. Does anyone have one for sale or know where i can get one?

thanks guys

E-bay ussually has them pretty cheap. Be careful though, if you have or plan on having a strong engine Ive heard that they dont stand up to much. Go find an M-21 Rockcrusher

Just a question for ya.If you are going through all of the trouble to put in a T-5 why not install a T-56?? I know they are more money but the T-5 will not stand up to repeated abuse. There was just a thread in here not to long ago about that.If you put any kind of real power to them they will grenade. That is why you could'nt get one behind a 350 from the factory.Even the anemic factory 350's munched on them.Just a thought.

yes the T-56 is the 6 speed. You might want to do a search and check out Billy grahms firebird/ camaro salvage yard. The M-21 is tough as nails old school trans. It is just about bulletproof but it has no overdrive. It would be best to find a wrecked 6 speed car that way you could get all of the trans swap related parts from a donor car to transfer over to yours.

If your building a blown 302 are you planning on driving it everyday?? If not I would say go with the M-21, why would you want overdrive.

Its probably just me but I think that a Rockcrusher 4-speed would be way cooler than a 6 speed. being able to slam through gears almost without heed

But then again my experience with new trans is mostly from my 700-r4 and I hate it.

They will fit in nice. You need to buy a conversion kit but they are cheap. You live in Jersey so if I were you I would look up and go to the spring Carlisle, its in PA if you are serious. They have everything you need and more. It also is cheaper I think. I think its the second weekend in June.

Yes, the t56 will bolt right up to the stock driveshaft and rear suspension, except for the torque arm bushing. Just need a 4th gen bushing and your done. I got my t56 remanufactured from consolidated transmissions for $1900 with a bellhousing and a 12k, 12 month warranty.

An M21 is not a "rock crusher", that would be the M22. There is the wide ratio M20, close ratio M21, and then the M22, which is the same as an M21, but with straighter cut gears and is not sinchronized. Those old Muncie trannies are not really that great, and finding an M22 is pretty hard and they bring a large amount of money. Go with the T56.

The only problem with the T56 is all the extras needed that add up a lot of $$$. My clutch cost me 560, and the cable X speedo cable is near 300. The custom crossmember runs a little over 100, and there are a ton of little things that keep adding up. Just take this into consideration before you go and buy a t56.

www.fparts.us they deal with mostly engines and trannys at the current time. Although they deal mostly with vettes and 4th gen f-bodies it would be a good place to get the T-56 if you want one.

I'm pulling a complete T5 setup out of an 85 Trans Am this weekend. It will include everything from the pedals to the clutch & flywheel. If you're interrested in it, email me at iroc85@sover.net.

T5

I’ve got a complete T5 trans. setup from an 88’, 305 V8 Camaro, including everything that you would need to make a swap except the peddles, I will still need them for my car. I just recently put a Fastburn 385hp Crate Motor in and swapped out the T5 with a fourth gen. six speed. I just bought a centerforce dual friction clutch last week and had it installed to break in the new motor, but it would not fit the six speed trans. I also have a Hurst Short Shifter as well new GM clutch pedal assymbly including master and slave cylinders. You might be able to find a used system somewhere with stock parts, but this setup is as good as you can get! I can give this to you for half the price for a six speed.
