Switching from mass air flow to speed density.
Switching from mass air flow to speed density.
I need some help cause i want to switch to speed density from mass air flow. I want to know what all is needed to make the switch and I also want to know the advantages and disadvantages (if any) from switching. I want to make the switch so i can run a cone type air filter on my throttle body on my tpi. any help or information will be greatly appreciated.
The only reason you want to switch is so that you can run a cone air filter?
Not meaning to sound harsh here bud but thats the most awful idea I have ever heard.
#1, with this cone filter you will now be sucking in hot engine bay air that will be about 150-180* ish. Last I checked, air held less oxygen per cm^2 the higher the temperature got.
#2, Speed Density sucks when you mod the motor. I wouldn't be surprised if your 427 wouldn't even run with a SD 730ECM conversion. Literally, it may not even idle on its own until you do major programming to the computer. If thats somthing that you do and are comfortable with then fine go for it but if you don't plan on tuning, don't expect to make ANY power or have a driveable car.

Let me see if I can remember all the parts you need since I did the conversion 3 years ago.
Need a 730 series ECM
A third connector for the ECM (MASS Air only has 2 connectors on the ECM)
Repin about 50 wires (basically move a bunch around and add a few more)
New Knock Sensor
90-92 Prom (Memcal Unit) with VATS disable if you have an 88 or older car
MAP sensor for 90-92
And I think that is it.
I did the conversion since I wanted to run the SLP Dual Cold Air intake and I bought an eprom programmer so I can program my own chips.
here is a pic of the intake on my car,
