It depends on the engine you have and the governor in the tranny.

Most 3rd gens shift at 4500 rpm, as set by the factory.

No, ALL the gears usually shift at 4500. I know this is the case with all 3rd gens that have TPI, TBI and carbs.

To change this you must replace the governor in the transmission.

Mine shifts at 6500 into 2nd, and right around 6000 into 3rd. It's completely stock. 86 Z-28 with 305 TPI

I control my shift points with that TV Cable adjustment.
Mine is shifting at 5K in all gears at WOT, but I don't have any power from 4600-5000, it just revs up and doesn't go any faster.
Btw, I hate Auto's so as soon as I can afford it, both of my cars are getting manuals.

Either your tach is wrong or you're not stock. Your tach should only read to 6K as well.
TPI has a very hard time above 5K rpm.

I believe mine shifts at 4600 from 1 st to 2nd and 5600 through the rest of the gears. I am not real sure on the rpm from 1st to 2nd because it goes through 1st real fast. I wish mt tranny switched at 6000. Looks like I will be getting a shift light so I can shift myself when I am at the track.

My car doesn't red line until 6000. And also I take that back. It shifts at 6000 into 2nd and about 5500 or so into 3rd. I don't think my tach is off because I hooked an aftermarket tach up to check and they were almost dead even.

You can change the WOT shift points by working with the governor. If the transmission shifts at a point higher than you like when in the "D" position, you can not shift any earlier manually. You have to bring the WOT shift points down with the governor.
