Steering column loose
Steering column loose
The steering column on my 87 Iroc wiggles back and forth. It's not the wheel but somewhere deep in the column. My friends 89 Formula did the same thing. He took it to a shop and got it fixed, but doesn't know what they did.
Has anyone had this problem? And what's the fix?

It's got a few bolts where it mounts to the firewall and one big bracket that mounts it to the dash. Pull off your kickpanel and crawl down and take a look behind the fuse box and tighten the column bolts.
I had the same problem on my Iroc. There are 4 torx bolts deep inside the column. Go to http://www.thirdgen.org there is a technical article that has the exact procedure to disassamble the column. Also I recommend putting some thread locker on the bolts so you dont have the bolts loosen back up on you.
I had to do it to mine, Pain in the *** you have to have the special pin puller or the right thread bolt to go in there, Mac tools makes a special tool for removal.. Use Loktite.. Or else you will be doing it again in a year, also do it soon or else as it gets worse the car will shut off whenever and not turn correctly.. Mine shut off when I turned thats when I had to go home and finally fix it..

my old formula had this problem where the tilt was broken. you could tilt at will
it was kinda weird. my dad took it to his mechanic, who claimed the bolts were stripped or something stupid and replaced the whole column
cost like $300 too...
i really didnt like that guy..
