starting problems

had the car out for less than a week, i stop to get gas, and the damned thing doesn't start back up. it cranks and cranks but doesn't catch. finally i give up, get a ride home and come back the next day with a cap, rotor, and ignition coil. i was thinking there wasn't a spark because i had checked and there was pressure at the fuel rail, and the air filter wasn't obstructed. well....we change everything we'd brought and by this time the battery was dead. we tried jumping it......nothing, just occasional clicking. we call it a day and come back later with a starter and throw that in......nothing. take the battery out of the good car, and it turned, but didn't even want to catch. funny thing, i noticed gas dripping out of the exhaust before the cat and took off the intake tubing, and it was also full of gas. any input would be greatly apprciated. sorry about the length.....oh yea, it's an '88 firebird with an L98.

One of many complaints we will be hearing about how cars will not start, stall and run like cr-p because they were in storage. These cars were ment to be driven and not sit for months on end. You store anything mechanical and over time parts will fail for lack of use.

Check the vac line going to the fuel pressure regulator. If the regulator blows it's diaphragm you'll get tons of fuel in the intake. Failing that, get it towed home and pull the fuel rail up because you'll have at least one injector stuck open.

You cannot repair injectors yourself, you have to take them somewhere to get them cleaned.

vacuum lines are a simple fix. if it turns out to be the injectors, id just buy new ones. i have a bad habbit of buying new parts when something starts performing differently. hell, it could be perfectly fine and id still replace it

Yeah the vac line is simple....when you pull the broken pieces off check for fuel inside them. If they smell like gas you have a bad fuel pressure regulator.

Try this place here for injector testing and cleaning. Pretty reasonable when I tried them a few years ago.

hey guys, sorry it took so long to get back. it is the regulator. the vac line was broke, but smelled like gas, plus i repaired that and tested the pressure on the rail, and it wasn't high enough. anyway, the regulator looks like a mother to get out. is it? are there any tricks? thanks alot for the help, i want to get back on the road.

You need some special torx bits which are hollow in the center and a quarter inch rachet.

I can't remember because it has been more than 10 years since I had that system but if you cannot snake your hand around it, you can take the plenum and TB off as a unit and leave the runners there.

yup. right under the plenum, looks like a bell. disc, the bellows to the TB and disconnect the runners and your good to go
