Starters

I'm thinking about replacing the starter in the Z28 but I need some advanced opinions on brands and cost (I've seen them new for 150-300 bucks )

Is Accel good?

I don't know enough to recomend a brand, but I do know this. Make sure you remember what terminals your wires go to. Write down what wire goes where or else you risk no juice running through your car.

when it comes to these sorts of parts i like gm personally. its definately more expensive but worth it in the end. i have an lt1 ministarter on my car and works great. i've learned over the many years trying to use discounted pieces that have been remaned only to find out they are in bad shape and don't last long.

another good idea is to find a small repair shop that deals with these parts and make good with the people there. i wouldn't pay the high price to have names like accel or others on the parts as those are mostly outsourced anyhow.

I agree with kandied. Mine packed up and I got a GM perf. part hi-torque mini-starter. Very pleased with it.

I went with a GMPP gear reduction starter as well. It's been over 2 years and the only trouble I've had was a mild heat soak issue last summer. Too close to the headers and no heat shield means an unhappy starter no matter who you buy it from. It still works though, and now that the weather has cooled a bit she has no trouble. I'll get a heat shield in there before spring and that should be that.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Going with a mini starter but now I have another problem. I replaced the battery today after it stopped cranking. I got a kickass deal on a new battery ($25) but now it just cranks and doesn't start! Anybody know anything about....

Ut oh...Have you checked for spark to all 8 cylinders? How long was the motor "not starting?"

If you get no spark, check for power at the coil. You may have blown a fuse/fusible link. Ignition module is also a likely culprit for a no-spark condition in these cars.
