Starter Problems...

okay, i was having problems with my starter, so i threw a new one in there...still doesn't work...

i tested everything, i have juice to the main terminal, and juice to the solenoid terminal when i turn the key...checked the battery, checked alot of stuff...but when i turn the key, the starter doesn't engage or anything...

the starter i ripped out, i tested it, and it works fine...the new one is a high performance CVR mini starter...

so there has to be a problem elsewhere...i just don't know where...is there a fuse or something hooked on to this??

i don't see how i can get juice everything, and juice when i turn the key, but it doesnt' start...

I'm lost, please help

Re: Starter Problems...

Sounds like a ground problem. Check the block ground to the battery.

Re: Starter Problems...

Located under your console, should have a purple and yellow wires going into it. Been too long and I dont have a book with schematics with me to tell you which to jump for testing purposes, but it's possible internally it's not making contact. You could try wiggling the shifter a little while trying to turn it over and see if it catches anywhere while your wiggling it.

Re: Starter Problems...

If you have power at the solonoid when the key is turned to start, then your neutral safety switch is not the problem.

Re: Starter Problems...

Ok man I had the SAME problem on my 305 and it took MONTHS to fix lol.
-Make sure that the starter has a good connection to the block; it actually uses the block as a ground.
-Make sure that the grounds going from the battery to the chassis are good (unbolt them and take a wire brush to them). Also, disconnect the motor-ground and take a wire brush to that as well.
-Make sure a fuse underneath the dash isn't blown.
-Check the inline fuse coming from the batter.
-Check the ignition.

Re: Starter Problems...

well i took a set of jumper cables, hooked one end up the the ground on my battery, the other end up to the mounting bracket of the starter, and still nothing. so that tells me it isn't a ground issue...

I checked the fuses under the dash, all are good...

the power cable from the battery to the starter doesn't have an inline fuse, just a straight piece of wire, so nothing to check there...

i'll go down there today and jiggle the shifter, but i don't think thats it either because i get power to the solenoid when i turn the key...so i would think that would rule any ignition problems out too..

i'm really confused...i don't see how you can get juice everywhere and it won't work...

Re: Starter Problems...

did the wiggling shifter thing, also put it in nuetral and tryed to start it...that didn't work either...

i even connected a wire to the positive of the battery, and tryed tapping it to the solenoid terminal on the starter...still nothing...that should've worked right?

I'm completely dumbfounded

am i missing something on how a starter works? the big terminal has power all the time, and the solenoid just gets power when you turn the key, thats all it should need to start isn't it???

Re: Starter Problems...

Is your battery fully charged? So long as your getting a good ground which it sounds like you've checked already, it sounds like a bad starter again??

Weird. Guess I would check with a voltmeter the current getting to the solenoid itself, maybe it's not getting enough voltage to engauge the starter drive?

Re: Starter Problems...

Did you hook up the purple wire to the outside terminal, or the inside terminal next to the block? You may be on the power out side of the solonoid and not the power in for start.

Re: Starter Problems...

IHI - i'm gonna check that lead for the solenoid, make sure its a good supply....should it have a certain current, or just a full 12 volts?? and yes the battery is fully charged, i thought that was the problem at first also, took it home, made sure it was fully charged and it was holding a charge, and everything checked out..

I pulled the starter out on a hunch, and tested it by jumping the 2 terminals with a piece of wire while using a portable power pack as a source, and it worked...it is a CVR high torque mini starter, so it just has 2 terminals right next to each other. big one and little one. 3 wires run to the big terminal, and one small wire to the little terminal. Should be wired right, thats how it was wired...

So i guess I have to check the current/voltage of the the power wire and solenoid wire. Both should obviously be 12 volts right? should the solenoid have a certain currect??

Re: Starter Problems...

Yes, the solenoid needs 12V to function properly.

Re: Starter Problems...

12.5 volts to the solenoid wire when i turn the key, 12.5 volts to the main power wire...starter works when i hook the power pack up...TALK ABOUT BEING CONFUSED!!!

anybody have an answer?
