Question speedometer

two questions...
- i own a 1983 Z28 that is equipped with a 85 MPH speedometer... i wanna replace that with a 145/150 MPH speedometer gauge... but i'm sure there's gonna be some sort of problem if i were to just change the gauge face... so what i need to know is what would have to be done in order to keep my speedometer gauge accurate?
- see, i have plans to replace my stock gauges with white faced ones, and i wanted to upgrade to a higher MPH gauge... i may also be forced to replace my stock tach gauge with one that redlines slightly higher - as from an IROC - will the tach be affected at all?
*any help will be appreciated, THANKS!

i just did this swap earlier this year, and it is a direct bolt in, nothing needs to be changed. Just pull one out and slap the other one in. You will need to drop your steering wheel almost all of the way at the end of the bolts in order to put the new guages in. The hardest part was unsnapping and snapping the speedo cable into the guage set, you have to remove all the panels above your feet by the fuses and do it from there. Its not hard, just annoying. Good luck!

You can replace either just the gauge itself, or the entire cluster. It doesn't matter what type of speedo you get, dual needle, or single needle, 85 or 145, they are all calibrated the same.

And like stated above, it just screws out. All I did was removed the trim plate, unbolt the cluster and reach behind to undo the cable - no need to drop the steering column like some state (unless you don't have tilt). Hardest part is removing the cable from the speedometer.

The tachometers are all the same too. The V6 and V8 are calibrated differently I think, but only the V8s had the 145 speedo. Only difference being the paint on the face to indicate yellow and redlines.

Everything should bolt right in and work properly

thanks for all the responses... but what i was trying to say was i just wanted to change the face of the gauges rather then replacing the actual guage (i know that's not what i said, i should of made myself more clear, SORRY!)... BUT i remember reading online somewhere that a guy actually just changed the face to a white background instead of having the stock face... but come to think of it, he probably already had the 145 MPH speedo, otherwise i'm sure his speedometer would be off...
but anyway...
how would i get my hands on the new gauges? (preferably white-faced gauges )
how much would i pay?

AGAIN, thanks in advance for your time!

You cannot just change the face from an 85 to a 145. The gauge calibration has no idea what is PAINTED on the face. In order to get white faced 145MPH speedometer, you will need the 145 first, then get a set of aftermarket white face gauges. They are just stick on plates.

Question

thanks for the help Marc 85Z28!

************************************************** **

can anyone tell me where to go for a 145/150 MPH speedometer? (i have a 1983 Z28)

i would like to replace all the gauges with ones that look like those from an IROC... but i've seen some IROC gauges with "IROC-Z" on the gauges and i don't want that... i just want them plan to put in my Z... help me find these gauges, please!

how much would i expect to pay for a set of gauges too??

thanks guys!

They sell on EBay quite often. There are at least 10 up for bid right now... Check over at www.thirdgen.org in the classifieds. I got mine for $80 with the higher redline tach from TVP (board member) many years ago. They were offered from late 86 to 89. You can use the cable driven 86-88, but the 89 might be electrically driven. Prices range from $50-$100.

I know of at least 3 of those clusters in a local junkyard. They only want $50 for them.
