Angry Speed Sensor Hell

AHHH that damn speed sensor.

well ever since I bought the car, the speedo has been wobbling and inacurate....someone said the VSS went bad....then I got a VSS SES light so I knew it was time to change it.......

Autozone ordered me the wrong part 4 f*cking times...so finally I went to Murray's and got one that fit. I bolted it on....put the plug in, then took off to see my brand new working speedo. After parking and going to class, I came out and it was dead. It doesn't even move now. I checked under and it's still bolted fine with the plug intact...I swapped it for a new one and the same exact problem happened again..... What could the problem be?? Thanks

I'm guessing that you checked both the drive and driven gear? The driven gear is the one on the VSS. The drive gear is on the shaft. You can see it looking down the hole where the VSS is inserted. Check it for missing teeth. That sounds like missing teeth to me.

Hey thanks aklim,

I took off the sensor, and looked up into the hole...and sure enough the red thing with teeth looks a little chipped on one side.....what would I do to go about fixing this? Thanks so much.

I believe you can take it to a tranny shop and they can take the tail end of the tranny off and change the drive gear. You need to get the part from a GM dealership.
