Smog pump problems?

Can someone tell me what kind of a problems a bad smog pump would cause? I seem to be hearing alot of noise coming from it + the car runs like crap. It's a '89 Camaro 350.

Lol, I plan to but I need to know which one is going to help the car more.. Right now im using Bosch +4 Plat. plugs (another topic) and to replace those with the plugs I want to its going to cost $70. The belt is $20 to bypass the smog pump, trying to figure out which one to do first.

I would have just used NGK V Power plugs and change them every year. I used the +4 in my wife's car and saw no difference whatsoever.

You should take off the pump, get a shorter belt and that will be it for that. Next, you will need to remove the hoses all the way to the AIR tubes on the headers and plug them up with pipe caps that are about 1/2 in or something like that. Finally, you cut off the air pipe going to the cat and plug it off too.

well, I have a cat but its one of those high performance bullet cats (feels hollow when I knock on it, like its empty or just a shell) and the hose doesn't go into it to begin with.

That's fine. There are 3 1 way valves. 2 of them are at the part where the 4 AIR tubes join into one large tube. It is a black thing that screws onto the AIR tube junction. Take that valve out and cap it off. The third goes to the cat but you have already had that off. Rest is fine.

Ok, would it be a problem not to cap it off right away? Just to buy the belt a pull the smog pump off and leave it like that for now (until I can get around to putting a plug in it or something?)

Edit: hmm, maybe I can shove something it it temporarily heh.

I don't know. The right bank is fine but the left bothers me. On the left is the O2 sensor and the valve is a 1 way and lets air in. I believe that when the car starts up, it pumps air into the manifold to mix it first. After the car warms up, all the pumped air goes to the cat. In that case, I don't want air to mess with the readings of the O2 sensor. If you plug off the valve on the left bank and leave the right alone, there should be no side effects. Capping it could mean duct tape on the inlet of the valve.

When I did this, the 8 small caps for the manifolds and the large cap for the black tube, cost me like $6.00 or less.

If you don't cap the manifolds it will be loud and annoying.

Remove the pump, and go to the local hardware store and get some pipe caps. Might run you a couple bucks
http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/serpentine.shtml

get some A/C delco plugs. Thats what GM putin and that what should be used. besides there about $1 each. You must be putting in gold plugs for $70.

you can change your plugs and rip the pump off for less then $20
