Angry smog pump emissions crap WTF

i just bought my 85 iroc about 2 weeks ago and the smog eqipment was not hooked up. I love my car and plan on modding it to hell and keeping it street legal. the guy i bought it from said it would pass emmisoins testing without it all but i dont trust him because he is the dumbest person i know.i need to have it done in about a month or so. last week end i just took off the smog pump and the hoses while replacing my water and power steering pump. i plugged the EGR lines teporarily and i want to know if i can just get long tube headers and forget the egr crap but i would still run a cat or dual cats. so whats the deal how can i get around it?

#3 make good buddies with someone who can do emissions tests and bring some little 4 banger to him and get him to emissions test it as your car....some guys will do it for a couple hundred bucks.

As i see it theres no way in hell you pass. Also do you have to pass a visual because then the first 2 sugestions wont help you? If you dont have a visual id have the dual cat setup if possible and test it without the rest of the emissions stuff and then come back and tell us what the results and numbers were. I would love to know how bad do our cars actually get when all that stuff comes off or is it all just a bunch of crap hogging 2/3's of my engine bay....im actually so pissed off with how the emissions stuff almost dwarfs my engine to the point where ive decided im either ripping it all out or just putting a bigger engine in there

o jeeze

thanks doug! I have to bring my car in august 17th so if i do fail i will have to put it all back on. on my 1990 truck i have a 350 and it doest have a smog pump or egr only one cat and i pass fine with that. Do all V8s have the same regualtions or it varies by vehicle? My 305 is tired and i was thinking about switching it with the 350 in my truck also doing a cam at the same time. so with a different non smog motor would i still need to put a smog pump on my 350 that i plan on putting in my camaro? i would always keep the cat or my buddy said he would make me custom duals with dual cats for cheap.

im not sure if the emissions vary from car to car or if theyre the same for all cars. As for a lot of your other questions they are hard to answer because the answer is different in every state and province so it all depends on where you are. When you get the test done scan in the test results so we can see what actually happens when it all comes off

thanks

Hey i still have all the stuff but its just not hooked up. ill see how bad i fail and ill go from there. But my friend has a 97 Z28 and he put long tubes on and completly ripped out all emissions. When he got his emissions notice he said his camaro was under a major repair and they sent him a letter to show for it. He told me that when he gets pulled over he shows that to the police i guess because it shows when they run his pates. I have no clue how long hell get away with it but hey i mite pull the same thing. he also said u could get a different title like as a show car or something so your exempt but i have no clue because it mite be rumors. please clear it up for me.

yeah i know around here you can get an "antique" or "show car" plate. Not sure what the criteria is to be able to apply for one and i really dont know how they could ever catch/punish you for driving it every day.....anyways id look into that but for now just do an emissions test as is and see what happens

First off the Smog pump better known as the AIR pump has nothing to do with EGR which dumps exhaust gas into the combustion chamber to cool the combustion temps, since exhaust gas is inert and will not reburn and thereby reducing NOx. EGR also is only active in cruise and not at idle or at WOT. AIR dumps fresh air into the exhaust manifold when in open loop and then diverts fresh air to the cats in closed loop all to assist in afterburning unburned hydrocarbons and assisting the cats to light off sooner. If your state like mine only looks for a cat, a good gas cap and to pass the sniffer, your OK. If you have a comprehensive visual forget it. I removed all my AIR stuff and installed SLP non AIR headers and passed my emission test with flying colors. My emissions test is actually better than when new and my Z has 214,000 miles on the original engine. It makes the engine bay look cluttered. According to some the AIR system is a waste of hardware and does very little to help emissions.

egr valve....its underneath your plenum and bolts to the top of your intake manifold....you can either just pull it off and block off the hole or you can use it as a good excuse to upgrade your intake. I too am considering removing my AIR but will probably wait until i do my whole exhaust. 92BLKL98 Do you still have a copy of your emissions test because i would like to know what the numbers were for your hydrocarbons and co's etc.

if i take off the EGR valave will i get an error code all the time. I just hate seeing that damn SES light and plus i want to keep the TPI setup so right now intake is not an option for me.

IMO i would just leave your egr alone. Youre looking at like 1-2 hp and for the hastle of pulling the tb->plenum, fabricating something to cover the hole (which really would be quite simple, flat piece of metal...2 drilled holes the size of the 2 bolts and a little silicone to seal it) and haveing to buy new gaskets for the plenum and tb. Im also not sure if it will trip a code but its not even really worth the hassle of removing it. Plus there is a school of thought that under normal driving it will hurt your cars performance because your stock chip looks for the egr and compensates for it so if your egr isnt there and the comp is compensating for it, it could theoretically hurt your performance/fuel mileage....just a thought.

Yeah, I keep em all for reference as to how well the car is doing vs. mileage.

on the 25/25 test:

HC- 018ppm 114 allowable
CO- 0.00% 0.63 allowable
NO- 0228 0796 allowable
1883 RPM 0000-2500
CO+CO2- 13.8% 6.0 min.

50/15 test:

HC- 019 117 allowable
CO- 0.01% 0.65 allowable
NO- 0339 0879 allowable
1255 RPM 0-2500
CO+CO2- 0.1 6.0 min.

This is better than the car ran new: HC was 34ppm. So the car is burning cleaner.

at 2500 rpms i was at 31 ppm hc's and 48 at idle with 200 allowable and i had 0.00 co% for both...that is with all of my emissions stuff and i bet i could get away with pulling it all out and still be well under 200. The funny thing is the car had to be backed up a ramp to get onto the dyno type machine that they run it on and my car wouldnt make it up the ramp so he just tossed the sniffer in the exhaust and did it in park....what he failed to realize is i have true duals so he only tested 1 bank of my car. Heh oh the fun of emission testing.
