small starter wire staying hot

well i put my motor in this saturday and sunday i put on the starter, well i hooked up my power sources to the starter to check to see if the starter was shimmed right before i put in the headers, well i turned the key on and the starter spins, but this is when the key is in the on postion, not the crank postion. my question is, is there a relay of something that should stop power to the starter wire when the key is not in the cranking postion? the small wire has power to it when the key is in the on postion, this wire should have power only when cranking. anyone have any ideas. nothing else is hooked up except the starter and alternator, none of the tpi sensors are hooked up. i can't figure out why the small starter wire is staying hot.

i would think it would have to be in your ignition switch. Thats what actually sends power to the starter via the purple wire.

You might want to check if your using the right size wire for the starter is the starter new??? You might want to check the Ignition switch

I think he means hot as in it has power, not high temperature.

Re: small starter wire staying hot

yeah the starter wire is staying hot ( power ) when the key is in the on postion, it has to be in the key switch, but i fixed it and broke the connection and put a push button starter switch so all is well as of now, just got to get out there tommorrow and set the timing, i rebuilt the stock motor, so its a new stock bottom end with dart pro one heads with 2.05, 1.60 valves, comp .566, .544 on a 115lsa cam, comp alum. 1.6 rockers, tpis big mouth manifold, slp runners, ported plenum, 58mm throttle body, hooker 1 3/4 header with true dual 2.5inch exhaust with flows, 255 intank and procharger inline pump. this same setup with 7lbs of boost went a 11.46@116
this was 2 years ago. so i am hoping for some good times this year, but i am going n/a because i fabbed my procharger kit to fit my 98 ramair t/a.
