Which size headers?

I am looking for maximum torque for my 305. I have been told that 1 5/8 primaries are the best to go with. Can anyone give me their own insight?

Thanx everyone,
Matt

Re: Which size headers?

yeah the smaller headers usually keep the torque strong and in the low range, so i have heard. alot of people are happy with hooker shorty headers.

Re: Which size headers?

I should probably go with mid-tubes for better power, shouldn't I?
Wold these be good mid-tubes? http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...17&prmenbr=361 I have heard they are great, but I am just looking for more opinions.

Re: Which size headers?

For anything less than a really wild 350, 1-5/8" headers are the way to go. You definitely don't need to go any bigger than that with a 305 until you're running a supercharger & good heads (and probably not even then!).

I've got a 350, went with 1-3/4" headers, & now wish that I'd stayed a bit smaller, at least until I bump the engine up to 383, maybe 396 cubes...

Good luck.

Re: Which size headers?

heddman headers are great for the money. it would be good to buy some high temp paint to cover them w/ before u put them on...the black paint will burn off the in the first few minutes of use, then look like ***.

Re: Which size headers?

Is it possible to go *smaller* than 1 5/8? For torque reasons? Should I sand the headers, then paint with hi-temp paint? Or just go over the factory black paint?

Re: Which size headers?

Just wanted to let you know that I have just installed the FlowTech headers on my car (shorty). The reason that I went with them is because they also had the "Y" pipe to go with it. I am pleased with them and am sure that you will also. They are also coated so I don't have to worry about the rust and turning colors.

Re: Which size headers?

How much did the headers cost, and from where? I am on a budget, so that is the biggest concern. I am thinking it will be cheaper and easier to just have an exhaust shop build me a y-pipe, so I am going to go that route.

Re: Which size headers?

You can go to flowtech.com and get all the info that you need. Plus I have a five year warranty with them. I priced the "Y" pipe to have it made and was a lot better off buying it.

Re: Which size headers?

Flowtech headers are cheap, it's about $180 for headers and y-pipe, but you get what you pay for. The headers are 1-1/2" primaries, not good for torque for a 305. I'd stick with some 1-5/8", like everyone else suggested.

Where did you get your 1 3/4 from?

Re: Which size headers?

I would recommend the Edelbrock TES headers....they aren't quite shorties, but aren't quite mid-length, and most are 1 5/8. They also come with a MUCH MUCH better than factory y-pipe.

Re: Which size headers?

Sweet Jesus.. I am not paying $300 for a pair of headers, lol. The reason I am getting these http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...17&prmenbr=361 is because they are so darned cheap, and I have heard LOADS of good things about them. And nothing bad, for that matter.
