i am going to be replacing my old shocks and struts and i was wondering which manufacturer is better koni or kyb

i am goiing to be replacing my stock springs with hotchkis's 1"drop springs

 

Koni by far

I have Koni yellows (adjustable) they are expensive, but they are one great shock, i love them. Well worth the money.

 

i have bilstiens, they are not adjustable but they kick ***

 

I have Factory struts and the B4C shocks in the rear.Anything would be better than that.

i had the koni setup. they were nice indeed but nothing compared to the bilsteins...


i love my bilstein and eibach combo. it rides like a dream in every way possible.

 

I have Koni's and love them! they are great in turning, but I think they ride a touch rough. I had a date in the car and she complained about it, but then again michigan has the bumpiest roads on earth.

 

yeah but what springs were you running as well. i don't see a particular set listed in your sig.

i did my springs first as my strut/shocks were decent and it made a huge difference in how the car rode.

you have to get the right combo to truly have a good setup. you could have the best springs out there, but it wouldn't matter if you were riding on gabriel shock/struts.....trust me, i know!


very true about the girl deal though....although if they are into cars they understand why things are the way they are. if they aren't you have to teach them and if they don't listen you should drop them off at the corner.

 

Basically you get what you pay for. KYB's are the best budget-wise that you're going to get, but if you want the best ride, handling, and want them to last get Koni's or Bilsteins.

 

I am needing to replace my front struts and rear shocks the only thing is im unsure about what I need to replace and how its done on the front. For the struts, do I replace the strut and the spring, or just the strut and reuse the old spring? Car has 175,000 miles and I dont think they have ever been replaced. Also when I take the assembly out I do need to compress the coil, right? Because in my haynes manual it doesnt say i need to, but I know otherwise that they should be, Id just prefer not to spend the day in the er. And thirdly I heard that after I do this replacement I need to have the car realigned. Is that necessary? Thanks for all your help.

Struts and springs are separate on these cars. You can replace just the strut without touching the spring. No need to compress the spring either. Support the lower control arm with a jackstand and you can safely unbolt and remove the strut. An alignment is NOT necessary after replacing the strut, but it would be a good idea to do it regardless.
