shifter issue

all right here is the issue,I have an 86 z28.I recently purchased a shifter knobb for my z28, to my suprise i find that when replacing a shift ball to a shift ****, there is huge differance, a shift knobb (the squarish kind) has two knotches in it to slide over shifter shaft and they are front and back side groves. on the shifter ball there is one knotch and it is on the driver's side of the shaft. here's the car.

my question is :do i have to change out the entire shifting mech? or is it possible to replace just the shaft? so that i can put "the better looking" shifter button on?

any answeres and maybe any detail would be greatly apreciated
