Easiest way I know how. Just make sure that the alternater is all the way in the "loose" or down position when you measure.
Re: serpentine belt question
just measure with a string like stated and go to the parts store and thell them how long u need.all those belts are the same and the part number usually corresponds to the length of the belt...also if your buying a new pulley or pulleys, the manufactors usually tell u what size or length belt u need.when i did the pulleys on my s10 it was right there, good year belt xyz....also the ac delete pulley shouldnt change your belt size cause thats kinda the purpose of the pulley is to retain the belt length and or routing

Well, wrong. The 5-groove belt on my car was removed from my 1987 Z28 parts car and most certainly does not require a tensioner. The alternator is bracketed just like the "old school" setup and is what controls belt tension. The 1988-92 model years like specified by the OP probably require the tensioner. The 1987 305 Z28 does not. I originally overlooked the year in the original post.

No, it isn't. The power steering pump was v-belt driven, but the water pump and alternater were not. Just correcting the facts since someone else out there may be in the same situation.
I installed an S-10 manual steering box so I don't even have a v-belt anywhere on my running 84 Camaro.

Anyhow, the system used on the 87 was a hybrid between a serpentine setup and a conventional V belt setup, but is generally considered a v belt system since it uses more than a single belt and has no way to regulate belt tension.
Re: serpentine belt question
now i'm just confused
i have an 87 iroc with a 305 4bbl, and i have 3 v belts, one for the crank w/p smog pump, one for the crank wp alt, and one for the crank wp p/s
it doesnt look anything like a hybrid serpentine system, theres no tensioner and all the belts are literally shaped like v's, not a single one has 2 or more grooves and there are no idlers, what is this hybrid serpentine system?

also
all belt set-ups have some way to adjust belt tension, on "v-belt" set ups it is usually adjusting the position of the accessory that is driven by the belt
with a full serpentine set up it is usually a spring loaded tensioner, but can also be as simple as an adjusting screw
