Serious Transmission Questions, Help!!!

I have a 92 Z with a built 700R4. Recently I had to replace the VSS. Before I was able to get the part the trans started going from 1st to drive at about 3250-4250 rpm from a stop or when the vehicle went into 1st. With the VSS it still has no 2nd.

What could this be?

I am willing to do my own work and wondered if solving this problem could be accomplished without dropping the trans.

I would appreciate any technical explaination or detailed procedure for diagnosis and repair. Any manuals or websited that deal with getting into this trans would be appreciated also.

Please correspond by email if you can.

Thanks

Jim

I need more information, as what you said is not making any sense to me? Do you have all 4 gears? Is it skipping gears?, or is it staying in "first" only? Let me know?

I hope this is a better explaination. In the drive position when accelerating from a stop the trans shifts from 1st to drive bypassing 2nd. If I stop and shift to second the trans starts in low or 1st and does not shift to 2nd. There is no 2nd gear no matter what I start in. This is daily driving not racing. It doesn't matter is I excellerate slowly or with some pedal the engine revs to 3250 rpm and shifts into drive from 1st. On the freeway while in drive if I excellerate too fast the trans downshifts to something, I believe 1st and redlines. Letting off on the pedal allows it to finally settle back into drive and slowly speed up. OD is very touchy, if I am going 65 and shift to OD I cannot use any pedal or the trans slips. Once in OD if I excellerate too quickly the trans slips until I let off the gas. OD has always been this way since it was rebuilt 2 years ago.

2-4 band or servo problem. Was the pin length checked? The band is the only thing in common in 2nd and 4th (OD). May also be a stuck 1-2 shift valve, not sure if this valve is used in any other gear without looking at a schematic. Pro Built would probably know. Was 2nd always a problem like 4th or did it just start happening? Good luck.

The shift problem occured about a year ago the first time. I don't remember is it went into second or drive, but it reved to the same 3250 rpms before shifting. This just stopped one day and didn't occur again until now. This time it has not stopped.

Also, since the rebuild it has always slipped in OD going into it and when trying to accelerate.

By the way the rebuild was performance rebuild with Corvette servos and other items.

sounds like your tranny shop done pulled one over on you. Whether it was intentional or just a slip up. I would suggest you take it to another since it has been so long since you had it rebuilt. And have them take a look at it. From the sounds of it they missed a step in the rebuild or left something out. Sorry sometimes that happens. You should have taken it back to the shop that rebuilt it immediately when it started slipping.

The touchy OD sounds like a misajusted TV cable, which might be your other problem also,or it may not,but it's a easy thing to check and fix(not to mention cheap). Check it out what do you have to lose.

Good Luck T>
