SBC Rear Main Seal Extender?
While looking at gaskets for an engine build I found this interesting item:
Victor Reinz's Rear Main Seal Extender (also through CarQuest)
Anyone ever used this instead of a wear sleeve?
Victor Reinz's Rear Main Seal Extender (also through CarQuest)
Issue: Many 1986 to 1996 SBC (4.3L/262ci, 5.0L/305ci, and 5.7L/350ci) experience a worn crankshaft seal area when using a 1-piece rear main seal.
Resolution: Victor Reinz now offers a rear main seal extender for late model SBC's. This seal extender may be used during an in-frame replacement or a complete engine overhaul. This patented seal extender moves the sealing lip to a new unworn surface on the crankshaft. The seal extender also prevents premature seal wear by eliminating the need for a wear sleeve on the crankshaft. Wear sleeves increase the seal deflection angle, causing accelerated seal wear. The extender is designed to fit into the back of the oil seal, making installation easy.
Application: Victor Reinz part number E-300 is available for 1986 to 1996 SBC engines.
