Rust Around Back Window

Is there a replacement part for the edging that runs around the back window? Mine is starting to show signs of age and starting to rust in places. Is it something that just needs taped, sanded and painted?

Are you asking about the rear hatch molding? If so, it was and may still be still available through GM. l priced the replacement molding when painting my IROC two years ago. It was expensive, over $400 (new).

Took the hatch off the car, cleaned the trim and re-painted it.

This is a common problem. I simply sanded it down and painted; a lot cheaper and easy fix; however, you may have to apply a couple layers of paint.

yeah, the replacement hatch trim is insanely expensive. You're best off refurbishing what you have or hitting up the junkyard for trim in better condition if yours is beyond repair.

Thanks guys. I will try sanding and painting. I assume you tape the window off and use a can of spray paint. Does it need a primer first after sanding? Would a Dremel tool do a good job sanding? What color was it originally? Was it flat black or gloss? Is there a paint code for that part?

Not sure what the OEM paint code is for the trim but, you could probably get by reasonably well using Duplicolor semi gloss black as the top coat.

Mine was showing rust and light pitting. Slow work but, taped around the trim edges along the glass then hand and da sanded. Primed and sealed before top coating with matching car color and clear coat.

Good luck
