Try this cam kit, and buy the recommended CC-981-16 valvesprings as well:
Comp Cams P/N CL11-283-3

If you want to take a little mass off the top of the valve, buy the K-kit:

Comp Cams P/N K-12-238-2

It's based on the Comp Cams XE262H cam, with a split duration profile of 218/224 degrees on a 110 lobe center. Dial it in at 104 degrees on the intake centerline and it'll rev to 6000 RPM, still power your vacuum accessories, not set any trouble codes, and have a nice lopey idle that everyone can hear.

I went 14.04 at 101 MPH on that cam in my 305.

Dan,

When did your lobes get wiped? Did it ruin the engine?

I guess I blew off the intake lobe last summer. I discovered that the car went slower at CamaroZ28.com's M7 event by about 7 MPH. However, it still idled fine so I wasn't sure what was going on. I thought maybe it was a bad distributor and that the ECM was pulling out the timing. Then, I spent the winter installing the roll bar and T56 transmission. I didn't get the car going until June, so when the CZ28.com nats came up at the end of July, I went out and saw the car drop 5 MPH and a half-second in only seven runs. I parked it, drove home, and two days later it started popping through the carb. When I pulled the valve covers I discovered that I was missing #6 intake and #8 exhaust lobe. The oil filter had collected most of the metal, which was mostly a fine black powder flake. It kind of looked like tiny discs reminicent of gunpowder.

I've since flushed the oil twice, and compression on all eight cylinders is still okay, (except for cylinders #6 & 8, which I didnt test). I have a new cam in a box on the back seat, but since July 26th I have only had thirty minutes of available work time. I have three very young kids, and one of them is a 'special needs' child. My wife has been working overtime so I spend most of my days managing the family duties. I hope to have the new cam installed in time for the CamaroZ28.com M8 event.

Tim Cole of Comp Cams blames the failure on the EPA mandated reduction of zinc content in today's motor oils, as well as the long periods of sitting my engine sees, followed by quick revs. They highly suggest that any flat tappet applications use a tappet bore grooving tool to ensure adequate & fast oil delivery to the cam on startup. They also suggest using an oil supplement package such as bottle of Comp Cams assembly lube at each oil change. It supposedly adds the zinc back into the oil package that new oils no longer have.

Personally, I think I'll just reinstall this new cam, and run it until October 25th, at which time I'll pull the engine out & sell it to finance the remainder of the Minirammed 385 engine project. I'm going to experiment with the next size bigger cam, the XE268H, which is a healthy 224/230 degrees of duration! I wonder what will happen?

It sounds like you really have your hands full! I hope it all works out and you can get it all under control. Good luck!

Martin does ask a very valid question....

I assumed a carburated 305 with appropriate modifications, incl. stall converter and 3.73 gears.

Then again, it could be an '85 LG4 with stock 700R4, which probably needs a torquer cam, as does the TPI for that year: The Xtreme Energy 254H, one size down on duration. However, the question was not on which cam was BEST, but which cam would make a choppy idle.

For that, I think the XE262H is probably best.
