RIMS..... looking for 17"... suggestions?
RIMS..... looking for 17"... suggestions?
I'm torn. I like the idea of putting 17" rims on the RS. This would be for looks, but would also help with brake sizes.
Trouble is, I don't like most aftermarket rims. I think that most of what's available out there actually takes away from the car.
On top of that, I want the car to retain as much of a sleeper look as possible.
I know that some companies reproduce the older Iroc rims in different sizes and finishes. Does anyone know if there's a company that will make a 17" rim based on the 91-92 Z28 style?
Right now the car has the 16x8 92 Z28 style rims.
I like the Firehawk rims that are being made again, but not sure how they would look on a red 91 RS. Does anyone have good pictures of this combo?
And of course, I'm open to other suggestions. What kind of rims do you guys like on these cars?

Brett,
I have been putting the final touches on a build up on my 91 rs. I bought the SLP firehawks(which I would recomend they have a cool center cap). They look incredible on the car, I would recomend them to anyone.
This is not my car I got it off of www.thirdgen.org. There are loads of pics to be found if you do a search with the key word "ronal"
Good luck!

also look into some of the billet wheel companies. their 17's are very reasonable and they have quite a few classic looks that are very similar. i tried working with various companies to custom make my own 17 or even 18" stock z28 wheels with no luck. most wanted 5-6000 for the first set.
after owning a set of billet wheels i don't know if i'll ever go back. they can be custom built to your cars specifications and pretty much designed how you'd like them to be, not to mention they are lighter.
good luck with your search.

Right now the Ronal R-15s look pretty good to me in a 17x9.5 or so.
If I go with 17x9.5 will that accomodate 275/40/17s in the rear? And if I put 275/40/17s on all 4 corners, will I need spacers?
If I don't use spacers on that size rim, what size tire should I use to avoid rubbing in the front? 245/45/17 or so?

I have the 17 irocs, with 255 BF Goodrich KDW's all the way around. I love them!

the size of the rim and tire do not determine wether you need spacers....you have to know the wheels offset or backspacing.
9.5 or wider will not allow you to drop the car....a 1-1.25" would be about as low as you could go without having worries if they are fitted properly.

i have a couple questions. What is stock width on a 16' iroc rim. How much would that rim weigh? Whats the widest you could go front and rear while maintaining the stock iroc ride height.
irocvette355 i think its the "650 iroc" wheel right? Do you know why it says front only on the web page?

the stock iroc wheel should be 8" wide and a 245/50/16 is a good size for that base.
for the front i went with a 18x8 using a 245/40/18 and it works perfect for my application because i want to be able to drop the car as low as possible.
at stock ride height assuming you had good condition suspension with low mileage a 9.5" rim with a 275 tire will work. anything past 1-1/2" drop and you will need to work on the body a bit to fit. some have been able to pass with a sportline drop which is suppose to be 2" but i wouldn't have. i was using a 18x9.5 with a 275/35/18 which was perfectly straight sidewall and a stock ride height and i was ok. any lower and i would have taken out a fender had i hit any normal bump in the road. either way the wheel is borderline with the fender being that wide in front which was why i went with 8" wide so it would be inside the fender....much trial and error and i'm very happy now.
the rear i had 10.5 with a 295/35/18 and again it was borderline with the fender....not sticking out but with any sort of lowering the fender would have to be rolled. a 9.5 with the proper backspacing or offset would be fine. i now have a 10" with custom backspacing and it's perfect with my lowering.
with stock ride height 9.5 will be fine all around. just look at slp's firehawk as they used the 9.5 all around with no problems from their factory....given pretty much stock to 1" lower ride height.
for those of us who like the cars lowered you have to go narrower in the front and the rear will need to be rolled beyond 10" wide. take into account that all of this is true pending your tires have a straight sidewall and your offset is perfect. if you have "fat" tires or a wider tire then what should be on the rim you will have a different set of problems.
9.5 17" 275/45/17 tire with proper backspacing and offset will be fine with a stock iroc height. use worn springs, bad offset, or a wider/taller tire and it's a different story.
good luck.

Brett,
If you order the Firehawks from either Ronal or SLP, the kit comes with 1/2" spacers and longer lugs for the front wheels. If you have a 1le brake setup I have heard that you do not need the spacers. As far as tires I put on 275/40's on all four corners, I have had it out for a test drive and they have not rubbed at all.
