The right way to set valves?

I did it till they stopped chattering then went 3/4ths of a turn more, but I dont think they're set right because a backfire problem ...

Is that the right way to do it, or are they too tight?

Thanks!

When I did mine I put my fingers on the pushrods(engine off) and spun them. My uncle tightened the rockers til the pushrods would only spin with effort. Then I tightened the rockers 1/2 to 3/4 a turn more. This worked good except for a LITTLE rocker noise still. Other than that it's worked great for almost 9 months now. Good luck.
