Removing weight, need help
Removing weight, need help
Hey guys. I think its time for me to make my '88 more of a straight line car and keep the '94 nice and streetable.
Anyhow, I am about to put my new powertrain in, and would like to know of all the things I can loose/remove to loose some weight. The A/C is gone (but in a box on the shelf), the heater box has been removed, center console removed and gonna add a B&M shifter for the auto, and a few other obvious things.
Anyone know what the sound dedening material under the carpet weights total? I would like to keep it in there if its light, but keep the dash, carpet, roof panel and the door panels intact.
What else can I remove that I am missing to save some weight. Thanks guys!

is this car gonna be driven often?
you could go all out and take out the heater system, put in lexan for the windows, or at least the hatch, that thing is a hulk, possibly gut your dash of any uneeded wiring/sensors/ect., fiberglass racing seat, tubular suspension peices...its all in how much you want to spend and how serious you are about it

Well, it'll be driven often, but I can live with a lot of stuff. The heater is removed, but I left the heatercore in there in case it gets too cold. Fiberglass seats will go in, and I'll likely remove the sound deadening stuff under the carpet. Dash stays, for now. Stereo is gone, rear seats are going, etc. How much is the lexan hatch? Who sells them? Thanks.
All of these are safety items but if you have a cage and don't drive on the street..... If you remove your front bumper cover there is a steel or possibly aluminum bumper with honeycomb plastic that you can remove and replace with a bracket or two. Just make sure that the bumper cover doesn't flatten at speed. Good for about 20lbs right off the very nose
I believe in 88 you had door crash beams that can be removed for 10-20lbs if you don't want to run glass doors. Only vehicle specific I can think of at the moment..

theres a good article at thirdgen.org about this topic http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/te...ngpounds.shtml
be sure to read that article, and if you havent already removed your front sway bar, do that. i just took mine out and its pretty beefy. this will hurt handling, but like you said this is more of a straight line car. this will also help weight transfer, and should help you hook a little better.
Drop an LT5 in there
All aluminum engine should help take about 150 pounds off the front end. All kidding aside
Light weight rims. Aluminum preferabbly.
The most aluminum parts you can pack into your engine.
Heads
Man the weight difference is huge something like 50 lbs. That's good for .5 seconds ET right there not to mention any AL head you put on there will make more power.
electric water pump
Single core aluminum radiator.
Aluminum valve train
aluminum or even better carbon fiber driveshaft
remove the spare tire
remove the thirdgen console for no console or put a 4th gen in there MUCH LIGHTER, trust me I know and you get cup holders
Remove the speakers from within your dash
remove any power window, door lock, power mirrors (and sell them to me) but that will save weight as well
Theres more but its late and I got to go to bed.

don't forget a tubular (chromoly preferably) k member, a arms, lca's, subframe connectors, pan hard, etc. all of these being tubular typically are lighter and if you get chromoly they are very light.
change over to coilover suspension
change to rack & pinion steering
upgrade with light rims(smaller the better) and brakes (especially rotors)
smaller or skinny tires for less drag
aluminum exhaust over standard steel
carbon fiber seats if you can afford it or fiberglass if not. (same for hood)
aluminum radiator if you don't already.
basic aluminum engine parts as above.....plastic or carbon fiber CAI if it's in the budget.
you could go as extreme to remove all the luxury power motors for windows and trunk, etc. if you have them but if you drive the car alot there wouldn't be much point.
it all depends on how much you can spend....
