removing the oil pump shaft?

How can I remove the oil pump shaft while still in the motor? once I drop the dizzy in it hit the shaft....and I want to remove it cause from looking down in the hole it doesnt look to align with the dizzy.....so I want to remove it and make sure that I can get the dizzy in.

long story short, I ripped 4 teeth off my dizy gear and replaced it ...the cam gear looks fine.....but I just want to eliminate one...

so I want to remove it and drop the dizzy in to make for sure that...that is the problem

how can I remove the shaft while stillfully assembled in the car?

I believe you're in for a frustrating experience. The shaft is prevented from coming out through the top by a sleeve that fits over the oil pump stub. Stock shafts have a plastic sleeve that could conceivably be broken off but it isn't there you'd never be sure that the shaft and the pump are fit together properly. Aftermarket shafts have a steel sleeve that you will not be able to remove from the top. The upper end of the shaft is not held in alignment by anything but the distributor. It will move from side-to-side until the distributor is fitted over the top of it.

I'd want to know why the distributor gear broke. That is not a common thing. I'd want to make sure that none of the pieces of the gear are near the oil pickup. In short, I'd be taking things apart to find out what happened and why. But then, not everyone does things the same way.

Good luck

for the life of me I cant get the dizzy to drop in and its never been this hard...for some reason the it just wont go on the shaft. I know its fits cause I have 2 extras and I tried them on the gear and they slide right on. I could put oil on the shaft and then drop the dizzy in and see where it hits...well I have one end of th car up and a jack to get the oil shaft to straighten up....ok well now no mark...and i know about turning the rotor in a certain spot to get it on the shaft but it just wont go.....I got a telescopic light and can look down in there and the gear on the cam is fine.....cause I can feel the dizzy gear ride down on it...

Im trying to figure out what is wrong but cant....it shouldnt be this hard.....Ive done it a million times on the motor.

could the oil shaft have come up any? therefor not letting the dizzy all the way down?

im at a stand still.

just a question. but you said the teeth broke. does that mean they broke off? Maybe what your problem is if any of them broke off is that a chunk of one of them is lodged down there between the shaft and the block or whatever preventing you from sliding the disty all the way down. Just throwing ideas out there

Oil pump shaft goes out the bottom. You need to pull the oil pan and pump off to get it out.

There's a slot in the bottom of the distributor and one in the shaft. If they don't line up, turn the rotor or use a screwdriver and turn the oil pump shaft so that they'll line up as the distributor is dropped down. The distributor shaft will turn slightly as it engages the cam gear.

What caused the gears to get stripped? Can you even turn the oil pump shaft with a screwdriver? It's held onto the oil pump but a plastic sleeve. Maybe the pump seized up and caused the gears on the distributor to strip.
