How about waiting till it dies and stick in a 350 or 383 with AFR 190 or 195 heads?

I would port/polish the stock heads or have them ported if you get a cheap deal somewhere. Nothing too extreme, just make them more efficient. DO new full roller rockers. Have new springs installed that can handle a little more lift. FIND OUT what kind of lift they can handle so you can choose a cam properly. Do whatever is needed to mount up a Performer or Performer RPM intake from Edelbrock with a Holley 600 or 650CFM carb, new distributor, proper mallory 3 port fuel pressure regulator, fuel lines...Tell Comp Cams your combo and goals. Have them think up a grind that will easily pull to 6000 RPM. I am thinking something in the 220-230 duration range.

Have a chip burnt for your computer so that it gets rid of the 5600RPM fuel cutoff because you'll be shifting closer to 6000-6200 rpm I am thinking. Wire the fuel pump to come on with the ignition(making it not computer controlled). 3.73 gears would better match the powerband and put you thru the traps at a very nice rpm. You could also do a higher stall torque converter to match the powerband which would make it damn fun at the track( or on the street with sticky tires). Mid 13's no problem maybe low 13's i'm thinking. Mine has been more reliable than TPI ever was and gets the same gas mileage on the highway. Of course you could install a small nitrous kit for even more pull your hair out fun Goodluck!

Port and polish your current heads according to the instructions linked at the end of my sig. The LT1 cam (if your 305 is a roller engine) is cheap--$50 on eBay--and won't require a new chip. A good 50 or 60 hp right there.

You must get headers, if you don't have any, and a 3" exhaust system.

If he goes with a carb setup, the only thing the computer will do is control the tranny lockup and the speedo.
It would be wiser to pull the intank pump out and put a mechanical one on the block. No chip burning would be neccesarry.

So the lt1 cam will bolt in directly, i will also replace the springs, is there anything else i'll need? Besides a new timing set?
